I listen to Leonard Cohen cause he's a f**** genius. Period. Create a list of what someone believes are the best singer/songwriters from the last 60 years and his name should be on it. His is a very distinct voice, I'll grant you. but so are lots of others who have made a long career out of not compromising and singing their own songs. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Steve Earl, Tom Petty..
He may well be a "f**** genius". He may well be a "very distinct voice". There is no question of his long career or his sucess. None of which answers my question.
Well, I never found the song "Don't go Home with your Hard On" to be deep, dark or depressing. I think "Hallejulah" is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. And maybe it's just the immaturity in me, but any song about getting a blow job ("Chelsea Hotel") seems to be pretty light hearted.

My point was that I don't listen to him for songs that are full of energy, have a good beat and you can dance to them. I think he is an amazing songwriter, both lyrically and musically, and I enjoy listening to the stories that he tells. This may come as a shock and surprise to some people, but it is possible to enjoy more than one style of music.

Now, if you want to talk about being down, draining and a mega negative effect, it's obvious that you don't like Leonard Cohen and you're not going to like Leonard Cohen. That's fine. Couldn't care less, more tickets for me. But I just checked the title of the thread. It's not "If you don't like Leonard Cohen, post your opinion here". It's the "Leonard Cohen Spring Tour" thread, a place for people who do like Leonard Cohen to find out about his tour and share stories and information. So, if Leonard Cohen is such a dark and depressing person whose music drains you so much, why did you even open this thread in the first place?
Dude, look, It is not that I don't like the guy. I don't know him. I have a coworker that plays a bunch of his music. I never heard of Leonard Cohen before. I am not putting Leonard Cohen down or attacking him or his fans.

I only asked a simple question, because all of the songs, I have heard played (and apparently many knowing music critics agree) have found Leonard Cohen's music to mainly be dark and morose. Take that up with the music critics. I cannot help the feelings I have felt after listening to his music. I voiced what I and others have told me they have felt, after listening to some of his music.
Granted those may not be the feelings you or any numerous of others felt, but they are the feelings that we felt.

Wouldn't it have been much simpler for you to originally suggest a song or two, that were not down, or morose or whatever? Rather than to go through all of that? He may be a genius, but that does not mean he appeals to everyone, anymore than JB does.

Now that you have suggested a couple of "positive" songs I will try to find them and give them a listen.

I stated before, I am quite sure many people do like him and listen to him. That's cool. Enjoy. I hope you get to go to his concerts and have a most memorable and pleasant time. I really do.

I'm really not familiar with Leonard Cohen's music however considering some people that I really love and respect enjoy his music I think I need to give it a try.

Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man

'It was about the feeling that we have of betraying some mission that we were mandated to fulfill, and being unable to fulfill it. And then coming to understand that the real mandate was not to fulfill it, and that the deeper courage, was to stand guiltless in the predicament in which you found yourself.' ~Leonard Cohen - explaining his song "The Traitor"

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! GOT MY TICKET IN THE MAIL TODAY!!!!!!!

I know this is a JB site, and I know Leonard Cohen is about as far from JB as you can get in almost every sense. They are both amazing storytellers, but beyond that, even what they tells stories about, are so different that it seems incomprehensible to be a fan of both of them, but this is an event I have been thinking about since the fall of 1992, almost eighteen years. and I could not be more excited!!!!!!!

I'm not sure that he has any uplifting songs. And, for all of Buffett's many positive, uplifting tunes, they're not all that way (thank goodness). I also don't think it's any great stretch that someone could be a fan of Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Buffett. I don't listen to Buffett 24/7 and I don't suspect anyone else does either. That would sure get mighty old after a while.

I first heard of Cohen through my older siblings but it wasn't until years later that I got more into him on my own through movies like Pump Up the Volume (which used his Everybody Knows to great effect) and the tribute album I'm Your Fan.
