Pinkeye
Another child at my daughter's daycare has pinkeye. Supposedly she's been on an antibiotic since Sunday and is back at daycare today. I called my daughter's doctor and they said she shouldn't be contagious at this point. Does anybody have any input to share? I feel like I should go pick my daughter up. I'm pretty irritated that the parents couldn't keep their child home at least another day.

Re: Pinkeye
When i have had pinkeye i have been told to stay out of work for 72 hours at least. I am not sure since i don't have kids but i would think they should be kept away from others for a little bit longer than 48 hours????

Re: Pinkeye
After using the eye drops for 24 hrs as prescribed, pink eye is no longer contagious. In fact, from what I remember my doctor telling me is that the reason it spreads so fast is that by time the eye is really runny and red it has been brewing for a day or two and that is the time it gets spread around.
Ciao!

Re: Pinkeye
Pink eye's a pain in the ass. Ever try putting eye drops in a toddler? The best time is when they are asleep. Most antibiotics do make you non-contagious after 48 hours but unless the infected party went to a walk-in clinic or emergency room, how'd they get an antibiotic drop on Sunday? Yes the parents should have given it one more day before sending their child back. Hopefully everyone's washing their hands and not touching each others faces, (yeah, try getting toddlers to agree to that).

Re: Pinkeye
The trick my doctor told me was to have my son close his eyes then place the drops in the inner corner of his eye then tell them to open their eye and the drops go in. It works! He still didn't like it all that much but it was easier than trying to force his eye open and put the drops in.

Re: Pinkeye
I'm going to be pretty mad if my daughter catches it. This same child shared the flu with everyone earlier in the season because the parents didn't keep her home long enough. Then my daughter got sick and then I got sick. The worst part is that one of the parents works from home and could keep the child at home if they wanted to.

That's not right especially if one of them works from home. Hopefully your daughter doesn't get it.FunkHouse9 wrote:I'm going to be pretty mad if my daughter catches it. Not to play devils advocate (but I will), working from home doesn't always = can take care of sick kids. Sure, people say "I'm working from home" and they set their laptop up on the kitchen table, open up their work email/im and then go goof off. But, there have been times where I've worked from home, had conf calls and had a crap ton of work to do and there was no way I could watch kids and work.FunkHouse9 wrote:I'm going to be pretty mad if my daughter catches it. That said, yeah I'd be p*** if my kid got sick. But, and not to rain on your parade, this isn't going to be the last time some (silly) parent sends their sick kid to daycare/school when they should have kept them home. As the years go on, you will get less annoyed by it.

Re: Pinkeye
You could go pick your daughter up however the fact is that she's already been exposed so if she's going to get it she will. She was probably exposed last Friday. As parents we would love to keep our children well but the fact is we can't put them in a bubble; they're going to be infected by kids from time to time and I'd be willing to bet that they are the ones doing the infecting as well from time to time. Hand washing is very important - not only that the daycare workers wash their hands but for us as parents to teach the kids to wash their hands often. You also need to realize that there are times a child will wake up feeling just fine - no fever maybe sniffles but later in the day it runs into a full fledged fever and illness thus creating the exposure to other kids.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I'll just say that I know the parents very well and I think they could easily have kept their child at home with little or no inconvenience other than having to deal with their child.Hockey Mon wrote:Not to play devils advocate (but I will), working from home doesn't always = can take care of sick kids. Most of the time your most contagious and are spreading germs before you really know your sick or what your spreading.
I caught the flu last year, most likely from a shopping cart. It was the only time in a week I'd been out of the house, because, yes, I work from home (and require a quite house b/c I work with customers on the phone).
I've sent my son to school (apparently) well, and been called a few hours later and he's had pinkeye or a stomach flu.
By that time, I'm sure he'd already shared it.

Re: Pinkeye
The Today Show did a story some months ago about shopping carts and how much they are a carrier for germs. They took swabs of shopping cart handles in a bunch of random cities and results showed that the carts were teeming with bacteria. It was really disgusting. Not a suprise though, since people have their hands all over them.Dezdmona wrote:I agree.ph4ever wrote:You could go pick your daughter up however the fact is that she's already been exposed so if she's going to get it she will. and on the shopping cart thing...most of the grocery stores around here have dispensers of wipes next to the carts now so you can wipe the handle down before you touch it!

Re: Pinkeye
You should be ok if they have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours. If the conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, then the person shouldn't go to school, work etc. for 3-5 days. If the conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria, the MD will prescribe antibiotics.
Usually, if the person has been on antibiotics for 24 hours and there isn't any more discharge from the eye, they are ok to return to work and school.
This next paragraph is taken from the WEBMD website:
"If the pinkeye is caused by bacteria, the person can usually return to day care, school, or work 24 hours after an antibiotic has been started if symptoms have improved. Prescription antibiotic treatment usually kills the bacteria that cause pinkeye."
