I was curious about this too so I signed up, I tried to follow Jimmy but apparently he or his must approve everyone who tries to follow him so I'm pending now.

all depends on the person or you who is actually doing it

No.
If it can be stated in 140 characters or less, there can't be much substance. Must be why so many politicians are jumping on the bandwagon. These are sound bites for the short attention span crowd. Doonesbury has been running a great thread on the subject.
As someone recently said, consider the first 4 letters of the name...

LOL...I have been taking a look around it, and as said the one sentence responses from people generally don't communicate very much.

It's exactly like the Morning Star Cafe... Only it's got whoever YOU want to follow posting in it, saying what they are doing all day long. Like Lance Armstrong was telling about his son's Pinebox Derby race today. I'm also following Tina Fey, Rainn Wilson, Ellen DeGeneres, Weird Al and Jimmy Fallon. I'm waiting for Jimmy Buffett to approve me.
Phjim is on there, as are Dezdmona and MalloryE, who started this thread.
And people can choose to follow you, like your friends and family members. You can text your posts to it from your phone, so everyone knows what you're doing whenever you want to tell them. If you just click on a link like mine above, it looks pretty boring because you're only reading one person's comments. It wasn't until I jumped in and joined that it got interesting, and like I said, more like the MSC, with lots of different posts and people who follow each other replying to each other. The popular thing is to say something pithy enough that a celebrity responds to you. Jimmy Fallon and Rainn Wilson seem to enjoy doing that.

I'm adding you Tommy!
Here's a New York Times graphic posted by Rainn Wilson showing who follows who among celebrities. Rainn says he loves being between John Cleese and Deepak Chopra.

Martha Stewart follows P. Diddy and Jimmy Fallon.
Here's a video, the Twouble with Twitters:

I haave not tried it. I don't care to try it either. I don't understand why people would, but I admit that is just me. How public do you want your private life? It reminds of shades of "1984". I am not trying to put a damper on it for anyone that enjoys it. I am only saying it is not my cup of tea, nor do I see the appeal in it.
So what do you do when the power or the server goes out, or your computer or their computer, crashes or is hacked? What hard data do you have to hold? Sort of like a favorite book that one might cherish. It is not the same, nor will it ever be.
If you do participate in such, more power to you and enjoy it. It just seems like the faster we can communicate what is happening in our lives, that we lose something. Something is somehow lost to me, while others may see something gained. Along with losing something, we gain something and the "price" is not cost effective, IMHO.

I disagree, Spider, but to each his own.
I don't feel I have much to hide, so privacy is not a huge issue for me. I enjoy interacting with people and this is currently one of the most exciting ways to do it. I wouldn't share anything on Twitter that would put myself or son in danger. I've just never been a person that attracts evil to me for some reason. I'm just not that exceptional I guess for someone to stalk.
Many people look for the downside of any new thing, I just don't have a tendency to do that. I'm sure there are bad things that could happen. When and if they do, I'll just deal with it. In the meantime, I'm gonna have fun.
Steve Jobs just joined Twitter today, and my husband was the SECOND person to follow him. When I started following him, look what he posted:
thanks @damnhellatall and @bonjersay for following. Let others know Steve Jobs is on Twitter, and that they should get Macs soon
It's his last tweet.... Click here and you'll see it!
http://twitter.com/steve__jobs
Where else would I ever get Steve Jobs to talk directly to me!
BTW, Jimmy Buffett still hasn't accepted me to follow him..... Guess that tells you something!
