Re: I need to vent
1 of the appropriation bills (there are 13 which comprise the total budget of the federal government) now before congress has approximately 6000 earmarks in it. there's 6000 examples of pork for ya. as reported by several national news organizations, the problem is queen nancy and the senate's court jester harry reid sat the president down and told him he was going to sign the bill with the earmarks. so there went the president's end of business as usual pledge.

Re: I need to vent
It probably doesn't, but it is the right thing to do. I also find it funny that you think paying WWII vets back benefits that they were owed is pork.

Re: I need to vent
I'm still waiting on a specific example. My point is that one person's pork is another person's job. Which allows them to buy a car, house, TV, clothes, etc. Look I'm not saying that there is absolutely no pork in the bill, but let's give it a little while to work. Maybe it will and maybe it won't. Just give it some time.

Re: I need to vent
When does it end? AIG just came back for the fourth time with their hand out. So these people get to refinance. What happens when they can't pay their mortgages after they refinance? Is it OK to then foreclose? Or since it was done once, will they demand it be done again? How about the ones who do not fit the criteria for a refi under this plan? How long until they start hollering at their congressman and senator demanding the same treatment?UAHparrothead wrote:I'm still waiting on a specific example. It's not funny. Those vets should have been paid when the war ended not 63 going on 64 years afterwards. That is the real injustice. In a plan labeled "economic recovery" and given the current economy, this is pork. Sad to say, but true.UAHparrothead wrote:It probably doesn't, but it is the right thing to do. Fiscal responsibility and integrity in our elected officials would be a good start. Then trials and imprisonment for those who defraud shareholders and the government.tikitatas wrote:I wonder what could make you people happy.

Re: I need to vent
I understand your frustration because I am frustrated as well. I want things to change and I want things to get better. I don't own a house because I knew I could not afford to buy. I get mad that people bought houses that they couldn't afford, but if they CAN stay in those houses then I think it would benefit the economy. I don't agree with everything that Obama has done, but I am going to give him some more time to make things better. I agree with AF that the real problem is in Congress. I think that Obama might have his hands tied for awhile. I broke my own rule by getting into a political discussion on here. It usually only leads to hurt feelings and animosity.green1 wrote:When does it end? AIG just came back for the fourth time with their hand out. So these people get to refinance. I want things to change too. But when will Obama stand up to congress? Will he? I did want McCain to win, no new info in that, but I was ready to back Obama as our president. Washington needs to be changed. Fundamentally, and I was ready to back him when he was elected. But since he got in office, it has been not just business as usual, but above and beyond. It is really frustrating. Which is why I needed to vent. I hope I didn't anger you, it is, after all just a discussion.UAHparrothead wrote:I understand your frustration because I am frustrated as well. Re: I need to vent
The president could stand up to congress today if he wanted to. All needs to say is I'll veto the appropriation bill if it includes the 6000 earmarks. but no, he won't....
his spokespeople were tripping all over themselves on last week's sunday morning talking head shows (face the nation, fox news sunday, meet the press etc.) avoiding the questions they were posed about vetoing the appropriation bill with the earmarks in it. nothing but BS answers about looking forward and not back....
the plain and simple is the president doesn't have the kahunas to stand up to nancy and harry....

Re: I need to vent
I think the whole "pork" issue is stupid. It seemed to me that McCain used it as a crappy catch-phrase distraction from other issues in the campaigning. It became everyone's big issue. "Oooh, that bill has lots of pork in it. It needs to be re-written." It's how it goes. If the "pork" is appropriate, so be it. That's how it goes in American politics. If giving money to people who were entitled to it a long time ago is considered pork, it's economically stimulating pork for those who receive/deserve it.

Speaking of pork...I just read that Iowa gets 1.7 million for pig odor research...FunkHouse9 wrote:I think the whole "pork" issue is stupid. Re: I need to vent
While I do understand the frustration of those who acted responsibly in buying a home, I also understand that when one looks at the larger picture, it is probably far better for us as a nation and society, to find a way for many to remain in their houses that it would be to have all these homes go into foreclosure and force all these folks out.
As for the President and expectations and promised.....yes, there are some areas where he has disappointed me, but I can think of very few people in my life that haven't at times, done the same, and I am sure I have, at times disappointed most of the people in my life. I think the task right now is pretty overwhelming, and the need to show leadership is enormous, and so I guess I accept that some promises may get broken. I do believe his intentions are good, and that the overall direction is one I support.
Obama has been in office less than two months, and the problems of the world and our nation cannot be solved in such a short time. So I am willing to sit back, with an open mind, and a critical eye, and allow an occasional deviation from the promises made as long as I feel the overall direction is correct.
