I'm not taking a position in any way shape or form on this, but I AM reminded of something my dad said to me after they'd been giving me some additional financial assistance when I was "down on my luck" for while. He said, "I love you very much, but I feel that I would be doing you a disservice if I continued to give you money at this point." Hard words to swallow, but I LEARNED from that experience!green1 wrote:When does it end? AIG just came back for the fourth time with their hand out. So these people get to refinance. What happens when they can't pay their mortgages after they refinance? Is it OK to then foreclose? Or since it was done once, will they demand it be done again? How about the ones who do not fit the criteria for a refi under this plan? How long until they start hollering at their congressman and senator demanding the same treatment?UAHparrothead wrote:I'm still waiting on a specific example. My point is that one person's pork is another person's job. Which allows them to buy a car, house, TV, clothes, etc. Look I'm not saying that there is absolutely no pork in the bill, but let's give it a little while to work. Maybe it will and maybe it won't. Just give it some time.

Yes, Seriously. Sorry, I live in NC and know people affected by relative location to hog farms. Keep in mind that "odor research" doesn't just mean making things smell better. It also means looking at improving current ways that the waste products are dealt with, including "deep pitting" methods. This can have a huge environmental impact which relates to huge agricultural impact. If that alone isn't enough, keep in mind that no business wants to be caught downwind of these places. If the smell and runoff is manageable, local counties can incite new business to put up stakes thus bolstering their economies.Gulfbreeze wrote:
Speaking of pork...I just read that Iowa gets 1.7 million for pig odor research...![]()
Seriously
It's important to do a bit of research when someone slaps a label on a bill. Just because the action taken doesn't sound like it will have economic impact, doesn't mean its not an important step in helping farmers, local economies, infrastructure and commerce. No magic wand will fix this.. there will be a multi-pronged approach.

Less than 5% is pork. Closer to 2-3%. I realize that amounts to A lot of zeros, but, If it helps all of us in the long run....
When the GOP had their " Contract with America" And during Clinton there was alot more pork.
As for bailing out homeowners, It p*** me off that my Grandchild will be paying these bills, I'll be worm food when these bills come due, But, if they bailout banks and wall street why expect that they won't bail out the homeowners. There is more than enough blame to spread around. Thats just what I think. Ron.

Re: I need to vent
Sadly, "pork" is how the government does business.
Here's an interesting commentary posted just today: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/04/ ... newssearch Basically, Martin takes the point that when *you* get the money, it's "getting your taxpayer's money's worth," and when someone else gets the money, it's "pork."
Apparently the current budget has about 9,000 in it. The Republican budget of 2006 had 12,000. So one could argue that Obama's cut earmarks by 25%. Unless one is trying to obfuscate the past.
That said...I bought a house I could afford several years back. I put a conservatively large down payment on it - 25%. It's in a good neighborhood fairly close in. It's financially under water now. I hear and empathize with the anger of those who feel like we're getting the shaft while folks like AIG get the diamonds. I feel some too. But I don't think that we can blame it all on the Republicrats *or* the Demopublicans - I think there's plenty of blame to go around.
Cutting taxes and regulations on the rich and corporations and borrowing heavily to fight a land war in Asia didn't work. I don't know yet whether more Big Government will help or hurt, but I'm willing to wait and see whether anything shifts in the next six to twelve months - you cannot steer the ship of state like a sports car; more like a cross between an aircraft carrier and a tranquilized whale. And what's happening now has its roots in stuff that happened months and years ago.
That said...until folks like you and me feel like *we're* getting bailed out...one wonders what's really changed.

When in Seattle I suggest Pig Iron in Georgetown; that's where Santa & I ate. They have Shiner.

Next time I'm down there I'm trying its sister place - Slim's Last Chance Chili Shack & Watering Hole. They have Shiner too.
