That's the thing, most of these kids stop at some of the tailgates and people give them a drink just to be social. Do you honestly check someone for their ID before handing over your concoctions or beers? I don't, I just assume they're old enough

If I wasn't sure about the age, yes, you bet I'd check an ID because I don't want to end up getting arrested. If you don't look at least 30 and I don't know you (and so know for a fact that you're 21) and you don't have ID, I'll be happy to hand you a Coke. In some venues/towns the police or the ABC will set up stings and send underage kids into the lots to try to obtain alcohol. Not worth my freedom and my job to hand some kid a beer..... Sorry if that p*sses someone off at a tailgate or they think I'm being antisocial, but you gotta protect yourself....

In Texas at one time a parent could give a underaged child a drink, not sure if that has changed. If I had wanted to, I could have ordered a drink at a restaurant for my son, the drink served to me and me give it to my son.
During his senior year it seemed as if the authorities were cracking down on house parties where there would be only one set of parents and several teens drinking (in other words a parent of each child had to be in attendance or you could be in trouble).
The few times our son was allowed to drink at home his keys were taken from him and he knew he was in for the night. It was our hope that we were able to teach him somewhat to limit his alcohol intake and to not drink and drive. Had the laws in Texas been tougher he would not have been allowed to drink at home. People can criticize me and all I can say is he was in a fairly prestigous trade school within 2 weeks of his high school graduation, passed with flying colors and on his own in a job he's been at since his graduation from trade school. All just prior to his 20th birthday. He's not hopped from job to job, pays his bills and is self sufficient while several of his friends are not. I think we did a pretty good job.

I was gonna make some joke criticizing you as a mother and then say "hee hee hee just kidding" but you had a rough weekend and I'm sure you don't need me being a dumbass. I think the important thing is teaching about basic respect for alcohol. Like it or not we live in a reasonably puritanical society and the things we're not supposed to talk about and tell kids about take on mythical proportions and become much more important than they are.
and for the record, you are allowed to buy your kid a drink at a restaurant or bar in CT, but I doubt you'll find any place that will let you.

Last I checked, Texas laws where still that way, I actually printed out the laws and made my sons read them, at times they were allowed to drink in our house but I would not serve there friends, that is why I printed the laws for them to read. From my understanding, in a restaurant you have to be within so many feet of them and it is at the discretion of the restaurant to serve or not.
My older son is now 22 and also turned out to be a great kid, graduated magna cum laude, has a good job, is married and just build a huge house, my younger two will be 19 this month and they are both doing well also. I know there are so many different opinions on this, and my biggest thing is no matter what the age 18 or 68, no drinking and driving. I am so lucky to have a hubby that is not a big drinker and a great DD. If we are away from home and he does want to drink we will take a cab, a cab ride is always cheap compared to a dwi or a life!
I agree strongly with someone who said earlier they should lower the drinking age to 18, actually I am not so much for lowering the age as I am for making the age the same for voting, going in the military, etc. To me it is absurd that you can die for your country but not buy a beer!

speaking of drinking in CT, this was in this morning's Hartford Courant:
Parents arrested for serving alcohol to minors at a party

I don't understand getting sh*tfaced drunk at a concert, but to each his own. For me it boils down to two things...the need to be in control and aware, and the bathroom situation. Alcohol goes right through me, and the world is not my urinal. Those portapotties get pretty nasty as the day goes on...blech. And I refuse to miss half the show waiting in line for the bathroom while the drunk girls try to figure out how to pull their pants down.
In the parking lot after the Irvine show a couple years ago I watched some jackass get violent toward a BNer who was just trying to warn him that he was about to run over a large pile of glass bottles. It scared the crap out of me. There is no way this guy should have been driving, I can only hope that the cops stationed right outside the venue pulled him over before he could kill someone. Or that he got a couple of flat tires from all the glass he hit.

Absolutely.......I love the tailgate and I love trying the concoctions but I try to make sure I go a minimum of one bottle of water per one drink, and then more water. If I pay for a concert I want to see it and remember it........plus I like meeting all the BNers I have never met before and remembering them as well
