Jimmy Buffett / Steve Goodman together

Hey Folks!
I am waiting for approval on a link that will take you to a site where Jimmy Buffett and Steve Goodman are playing live, acoustic together. This was recorded in 1973 at Bubba's in Coconut Grove and at this stage of the game, no one had a clue who Jimmy Buffett was. When Steve introduces him, there's a quiet, polite applause.
The songs they are doing are a Hank Williams song "You Win Again" and Buffett's "Cuban Crime of Passion". Just as interesting is the saucy, off color remarks that Steve and Jimmy exchange between each other on stage and to the crowd! These would get them banned on just about any Buffett site...
Anyway, I don't know how long it will take for the administration to respond to my e-mail to them requesting permition to post the link, but if they do, I'll post it!

Wow, if I'm not mistaken, that would be the oldest-known live JB recording, wouldn't it? I've been out of the loop on collecting for a few years now, but last I heard, the clip from Boston in January '74 was still the earliest. Can't wait to hear and see this!

Look forward to seeing it--must admit that I had seen Goodman but Jimmy wouldn't be on the radar for me for many years.

That would top the oldest in my collection, audio or video. Here's hoping "the administration" comes through!

According to the
1974 set lists, the Cambridge show was 1/3/74. Haven't seen that one around. Would you happen to have it?
I recently came across the 1/2/74 show from Philadelphia, beating that by just a day! That one is now up on the jokelben FTP server. Love this old stuff.

I need more caffeine. I thought it was "Jimmy Buffett/John Goodman together" when I first read it and wondered where Jimmy crashed a Blues Brothers fundraiser.

Steve Goodman, John Prine, Jimmy Buffett...Al Vacado, Kitty Litter, Marvin Gardens.
Hilarious. Wish I could have seen Steve live. Never had the chance. Both he and Prine were big influences on Jimmy's music and he has covered a few of their songs.

Yes, but it's in my parents' basement in Philadelphia, I'm afraid! Speaking of Philadelphia, I hadn't heard of the 1/2/74 show. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for that one.

I have a recording that, when I received it, was claimed to be from 1973, but I think it is actually from 2/19/74. At least the venue and set list match that which is in the database.

Chris, who do you need "approval" from, since both recordings are publicly available for listening on the main page at http://phlockersgonewild.ning.com/? I've already copied both songs to my iPod and I've seen downloads on other websites already.
Yep, the language is a tad "salty".

Darned if it doesn't say that Chris, you are correct. I stand corrected.

I would love to be able to put those on my iPod!
I have a great SG DVD, but not that much music by itself.
He was such a talented, funny, cute little guy.

Here are two essential Steve Goodman purchases ....
http://www.amazon.com/Big-Surprise-Anth ... B000000DM7
Still best remembered for his evocative "City Of New Orleans," which brought Arlo Guthrie his long single hit, the late Steve Goodman was a gifted songwriter, affecting singer, and spirited acoustic guitarist who forged a link between the urban troubadors of the '60s and the "sensitive" singer-songwriters of the '70s. The elfin Chicagoan could tug heart strings as well as the latter camp (try his version of "The Dutchman," or fine originals like "Banana Republics" and "Yellow Coat"), but Goodman was never content to brood over mere heartbreak. His recordings and solo live performances were ripe with humor, from lively updates of old rags and Tin Pan Alley tunes ("It's A Sin To Tell A Lie") to topical parodies ("Lincoln Park Pirates," "Chicken Cordon Bleus," and the ultimate country song, "You Never Even Call Me By My Name," written with John Prine), and this generous two CD anthology captures it all, culling studio and stage tracks from throughout his career. --Sam Sutherland

Seattle-based journalist Clay Eals has written Steve Goodman: Facing The Music (ECW Press, $29.95), the definitive biography of the beloved Chicago singer-songwriter.
You can't put it down. .....
....
The Goodman biography is immaculately researched and Eals stitches his world of source material (interviews and file stories) in a seamless manner. The book is too heavy on Goodman's youth, but the stories of death are honest and poignant. Buffett visited a fading Goodman in a Seattle hospital and played a song he wrote for the old Cubs fan. Photographer Jim Shea accompanied Buffett on the visit. After Buffett finished the song, Shea said, "all the bells and whistles next to Steve's bed went off." Buffett whispered, "I guess he didn't like my song."
Goodman died the next day.

It looks as if the recordings were removed this morning sometime. My guess is because people were starting to download copies for themselves via the playback "streaming". They originally put the recordings up and disabled the music player feature that allows you to right-click-copy the song, but that doesn't stop anyone from recording the streaming playback if they know how to do so.

Well so much for those links we were waiting for.

Exactly. Yeah, the songs were pulled this morning. There was a blog that went along with it and perhaps some never got to reading it. It requested no one download it. The original recording was done by My Friend Dave, who was the soundman at Bubba’s. I had a request from someone out of town for it and I asked Dave if it was okay. For the first and only time, as long as I’ve known My Friend Dave, he gave a negative answer. However, he explained, and I fully understood, and I’m sure everyone here will as well.
He said that he made the recording way back when and stated that he wants Buffett to have it. What he doesn’t want however is for a fan or one of Buffetts minions to hand it to him saying “Hey! Look what I got for you!”. Dave recorded it and preserved it for all these years and felt that if someone should hand it to Jimmy Buffett, it really should be him. I couldn’t agree more and I’m sure everyone else agrees. On top of that My Friend Dave said that he’d be happy to put it in the trade circles after he gives it to JB!!!
I tried to get in touch with Buffett himself. I did get to one individual who worked for him, was excited and spoke to JB about it. He mentioned that JB thought he remembered My Friend Dave, as Dave did sound for a few places over the years. Buffett was in giging Hawaii then (2007) and we were working on having the Rondezvous when he got back to Fla. Then it fizzeled. “Well, we really don’t know who this guy might be. You never know these days” Yeah. Hello. Buffett’s “people” are now thinking that My Friend Dave, a sixtyish folk fan, with a perpetual smile on his face, will have a stick of dynamite stuck up his keester and blow their cash cow to smithereens, leaving them all un-employed.
“Well, just give it to ME and I’ll give it to him” Wrong. I already gave them another recording by My Friend Dave of Buffett’s mentor Gamble Rodgers. “Oh! That’s a good recording!” was the last I heard of that. With Buffett’s love of Gamble Rodgers, I have little doubt what he said to the hero gave that to him.
We’ll see about getting the recording back up. Besides, there is the whole rest of the gig that is still in limbo. I need to talk to My Friend Dave as well as the head of Phlockers Gone Wild and take it from there.
Keep you all posted!
