*OFFICIAL* Word Changes?

In another thread (Booed for Forgetting Lyrics) we got to talking about how we, as Parrotheads, treasure the moment of having been at a concert where Jimmy alters the lyrics (or forgets them!). So I need to know.....

In the original recording of the song "Volcano", at the end when Jimmy does his patter ("Don't want to land in New York City; Don't want to land in Mexico; etc.") the lines also refer to "Three Mile Island" and "the Ayatollah" - a reference to incidents and people that were, in fact, of topical interest *at that time* but probably incomprehensible to most people today. I've seen a couple of concert videos where he alters the "Ayatollah" line on a site-specific basis — referring to where he's playing or a guest artist he's playing with — but is there/has there been an "officially updated version" of the lyrics that he sings these days?

Also, on the recording "Fruitcakes" the lyric is something like "We're seven years from the Millennium"; well, we're now almost ten years past it. Does he change this one in concert nowadays, too?

Not sure if there is an official change in "Volcano". O do know I have heard him change the "Fruitcake" lyrics a few times now. :wench:

I know Jimmy changes Fruitcakes each year to say "it's been 9 years since the millennium".

As far as "Volcano" goes, I think Jimmy updated it in the "Meet Me in Margaritaville" CD

Agreed, it's not a big deal, but I sing karaoke. "Volcano" is one of my better songs, and I want to be accurate.

Go with the original lyrics or alter them to fit your locale. That's what I'd do.

Wait - I take that back.

I NEVER sing karaoke unless I'm very drunk and with a group.

Last year, Jimmy changed *most* of the lyrics to "Fruitcakes" when he performed it at Mountain View.

"Volcano" does change from time to time, and in concert the last verse pretty much *always* refers to where he's playing that night. There's a very interesting and somewhat updated set of lyrics on the Meet Me in Margaritaville album, including "don't want to be upside-down in Nantucket/Don't want to land in no Negril Bay," referring to an accident and the infamous "Jamaica Mistaka" incident, respectively.

When I cover "Volcano," I've worked out a couple of lines that reference some of my own stuff in the same way as Jimmy did on MMIM. And like Jimmy, I include a shout-out to where I'm playing. But then, I do the whole "songwriter/artist" thing, not karaoke, so it probably works better for me than it might for you.

And I remember one concert replay on Radio Margaritaville some years back in which Jimmy did a whole different "lost verse" to "Margaritaville." The first line went, "My favorite topic/Is life in the tropics." I *still* haven't found out what the rest of those lyrics were, but I made up a pretty good set on my own. :D

Until you pointed it out, I didn’t notice. Now that you have, it stands out like a sore thumb. Kind of strange.

I've been called a nitpicker on other boards because usually I'm the one who spots something like that. I guess it's only fair that I be hoisted by my own petard.
BTW — I went back to the original post (and my second post further down) and corrected it. Each of the rest of you do the same, and we'll make Desdemona look like she's been hitting the Tonga Juice again.

Well Jimmy got it right in Fruitcakes (the LP version that is) for how long it was until the millenium - at that time, which was 7 years (2001).

I wouldn't exactly count that version of Volcano on MMIM as 'official', even though he changed the words on the studio recording (especially since it sounds so bad)...

Which, somehow he got a hold of. Which doesn't explain why nothing has been remastered except for the MMIM tracks...

And if you really wanted to hear all of those changes, click here....... viewtopic.php?f=29&t=75069 (and also possibly throw-up a little in your mouth after listening)

A lot of bands change some lyrics to fit the city they are in or the times they are in. I see nothing wrong with it.
