I really do prefer reading from a book, turning the page, etc. But if I were going on a long airplane trip and wanted to bring several books or needed lots of bulky research material, I'd get a Kindle (or it's competitor, forget the name).

Reading for me is as much tactile as it is visual...I can't imagine not having a book in my hands. I hate reading long stuff on a computer screen, so I can't imagine I'd enjoy a kindle. It might be practical in the situations Jen mentioned, but right now I don't think it's for me.

Besides, going to the used book store is a social event, everyone is there!

I too am so attached to books. But the Kindle really intrigues me. My best friend, who travels a lot for work got one about 6 months ago and really loves it. He is reading more than in the past, and the Kindle makes it easy for long trips where you don't want to carry more than one book. And he uses it a lot for newspapers, etc. His partner just bought a Kindle 2 and seems to love it as well.

When it first came out, Charlie Rose did a 1 hour interview with Jeff Bezos, and he did a another hour with him just as Kindle 2 came out---I know you can access those inteviews--they are both really interesting and talk a lot about the many features, and, in the more recent interview, the differences with the new version-might be worth looking at them.

Bezos will not release sales figures but claims that Kindle downloads already account for 10% of Amazon.com's book sales.

Is it still considered a bad idea to burn the Kindle at both ends?

Is the Kindle anything like the Sony eBook?

Yep--Kindle is the Amazon.com reader, now in its 2nd generation, 14 months after the original one debuted. My best friend has a Sony Reader before the Kindle and loves his Kindle.

I'll likely wait until the 3rd generation... I think they can only mature from this point

Interesting book selection.... I notice that my favorite author doesn't have any books available just yet (because the publisher wants to stay in the dark age?)

You don't have two ends of your Kindle to burn anyhow.

Bezos has talked about this issue. For example, they have not been able to get the rights to the Harry Potter books so they aren't available. And they are working to make color an option so they can have travel books, etc, but the longterm goal is every book ever published.

Current title list is limited some, but this project is only 14 months old so far.

What is the screen like? If it is like staring at a computer screen for hours then that might be really hard on the eyes (at least it would be on mine). Maybe they have designed it a bit differently?

I haven't used one, but I know they have worked hard on doing as much as they can to relieve eye strain--that is one of the reasons that they have not yet gone to color. In the second Charlie Rose interview, Bezos talks quite a bit about eye strain (at least from what I can remember). You might also look at the website to see what they say.

I think the Kindle uses what's called e-ink, where it's very similar to looking at ink on a page, instead of a computer screen. It shouldn't cause eyestrain.

I just think they're a little too expensive. Almost $400 for a book reader? And you still have to pay for the books.

You can get a cheap iPod and download a ton of audiobooks for that price.

Our Kindle arrived today ... have put two books on so far, but haven't started reading ... am waiting for it to fully charge.

It seems to be pretty user friendly.

Hubby LOVES his! My sister in law said she would miss holding a book too much. That day, she started reading one of the books on hubby's and I saw her actually try to turn the page! Hubby said he has done the same thing!

So...yes...great reviews!
