The Freedom Tower is no more (poll)
I don't know if anyone caught this on the news this morning but appareantly a Chinese real estate company has become the first commercial tenant of the future tower and from what I have heard werent happy with the name, probably has to due with the whole freedom thing, not a popular word over there. So the name has been changed to One World Trade Center, which most know was the name of one of the towers where thousands have gave their lives. There are many different opinions on this subject and I was curious what BN'ers thought.

Nice to see the US caving on the one thing that sets us apart from so many countries...sheesh.
This disgusts me. If the Chinese don't like the name they don't have to move in. Simple as that. I hope public outcry gets the name changed back...fast.

It is not the US caving, it is the owner of a multi billion dollar commercial building catering to the wants of his customers.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Nice to see the US caving on the one thing that sets us apart from so many countries...sheesh.![]()

If there is enough outcry to force the owner to reconsider, it will change; but it will be a business decision.

It stinks. But then again, so does the design. They went with the less-inspired idea, so it only makes sense they would go with a less inspired name.

Is the Port Authority not a US business? How many lives did they lose on 9/11? It's appalling. I understand what you're saying Z, but I stand by my first statement.z-man wrote:It is not the US caving, it is the owner of a multi billion dollar commercial building catering to the wants of his customers.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Nice to see the US caving on the one thing that sets us apart from so many countries...sheesh.![]()

Instead of arguing over what to call the building, maybe they should build the f**king thing. It's 7 1/2 years already. DO SOMETHING!!!!!!

I read the link. I didn't see anything that suggested the future Chinese tenant had anything to do with the name change. I think those who want to call it something else live much closer to home.z-man wrote:It is not the US caving, it is the owner of a multi billion dollar commercial building catering to the wants of his customers.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Nice to see the US caving on the one thing that sets us apart from so many countries...sheesh.![]()

True, the article doesn't say much on that, but I had seen on another new source that there was a question as to whether this particular company was willing to occupy the building with the nane the way it was.flyboy55 wrote:I read the link. Re: The Freedom Tower is no more (poll)
Buildings may get 'official' names, but sometimes other things make people forget or ignore the original name.
Take this building, for instance:

Built in Philadelphia in 1753 as the original State House for Pennsylvania, we now know it as "Independence Hall" because of the events which took place there in the spring and summer of 1776.
And it doesn't always have to be something significant or world-shaking. Consider this building:

The "official name"? The Mission San Antonio de Valero. Construction on it first started way back in 1724.
But to almost every American (and absolutely *EVERY* Texan), it is and forever will be "The Alamo". But the battle really had nothing to do with its name.
So how did it get the name "Alamo" anyway? Well, by 1807 it was a garrison point for troops of the Spanish cavalry.
The name of their unit was "La Segunda Compañía Volante de San Carlos del pueblo del Alamo" (literally, "The Second Flying Company of San Carlos of the town of the Alamo" —
'flying', in this case, refers to speed of movement; i.e., highly mobile).
And where did the town of Alamo come in? Well, the company was organized and its members were recruited from the Coahuilan pueblo of "San José y Santiago del Alamo de Parras";
a village founded in 1731 by Tlascalan Indians not far from the existing ranchero named "El Alamo".
So, the building in NYC may get named "One World Trade Center"......
but over time and by common usage it will become "The Freedom Tower".
History class is dismissed.

Can you see an american company going to asia and saying, I know that you have name the building (translate) Big Red Dragon....but I do not think I want to be in a building that one would think of it as the belly of the dragon...well you know what I mean

I may be in the minority here, but I don't like "Freedom Tower". It seems very cliche to me.

SCREW what any other country in the world thinks!!!
It's OUR country, and it was OUR people who had their lives taken from them by a bunch of CAMEL SU.KK.ING A$$HOLES
Call it the FREEDOM TOWER, and, as Larry said, get the thing built sometime this century.
The other option would be to let the families of the victims decide what to call it.
And if the Chinese OR ANYBODY ELSE in this world doesn't like it, they can stick it where the sun doesn't shine and their mother's don't wash.
