Angels pitcher Adenhart killed in hit and run

Post by Brown Eyed Girl »

This is beyond sad. Nick had been called up to the majors after 3 of the Angels pitchers were injured and he was the starter last nite. Hours after the game, he's killed in a hit and run crash in Fullerton. Only 22 years old.... :( Sail on, Nick...prayers to your family and teammates.
TMZ reports that 22-year-old Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a hit-and-run car accident early Thursday morning — just hours after pitching six shutout innings against the Oakland A's:

Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light and hit the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

The AP's story on Wednesday's game — in which the A's beat the Angels 6-4 — notes that it was Adenhart's fourth major league start:

Angels rookie Nick Adenhart scattered seven hits over six scoreless innings and escaped a pair of bases-loaded jams. He struck out five and walked three in his fourth major league start.

They are reporting that there was indeed another member of the Angels organization killed but they aren't releasing the name or if it was a player...but the way it's being worded leads one to believe it might indeed be a player. :( I guess there were 3 men and one woman, who was the driver. One of the men survived. The car that hit them was driven by a drunk driver. :x

I'd heard on the news this morning that it was a hit & run, which tells me that they don't know yet who the driver was or what his BAC was at the time.

I do, however, hope that they catch the perp. And while I don't wish bad things for people, I would shed no tears if s/he gets painfully crippled while resisting arrest.

Tragic, tragic story. I hope that their families get the healing and comfort they need.

According to an article on espn.com:
Police Lt. Craig Brower said the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for investigation of felony hit-and-run.

The driver is in custody and he was indeed drunk and is now facing a number of felony charges. This story is getting almost constant coverage on the radio news stations down here. Right now there is a press conference going on, they still haven't made a positive ID on the second male killed.

Nick had called his Dad the day before yesterday and told him he needed to get to yesterday's game because something special was going to happen, and his Dad was at the game. I can't imagine what it would be like to go from pure elation at seeing his son pitch the game of his life, to the devastation a few hours later upon learning of his tragic death.

The Angels have canceled today's game, but they will have the team all together. By all accounts Nick was a fine young man, and a rising star in the Angels organization.

That same article from espn.com says an Angels spokesman said there were no other members of the organization involved in the accident.

Also:
Fullerton police said Andrew Gallo, 22, of Riverside, Calif., was the driver of the minivan and that he ran from the scene. Anaheim police arrested Gallo half an hour later, and said that his license had been suspended previously on a drunken driving conviction.

The driver had a suspended license for previous drunk driving, that sucks.
