So how about cell phones on planes? Texting, fine. Wi-fi, fine. I honestly think there will be violence if they let people start talking on mobile phones on airplanes.... :o

Too close of quarters for multiple conversations......too many people are loud talkers.

if two people are talking in person on the plane, does that make a difference?

is it the conversation that bothers y'all or the fact that it's a cell phone?

For me, I think it's the conversation. I especially mind when two people talk incessantly and loudly. On the phone, people tend to talk even more loudly than in person. I think quarters are tight enough on an airplane that people should keep conversation to a minimum and even then talk very quietly.

people tend to talk more loudly on a cell phone than in person, I believe. someone sitting next to me, using a lap top on a late night flight, irritated the hell out of me. the constant tap, tap, tap, and the glare of the monitor... :o

almost everyone else on the entire airplane was quiet except for him.

A conversation is usually appropriate for the ambient sound level of the plane.
Not so with a cell phone.
If I am in the window seat and the two people next to me are having a quiet conversation... no problem.
If I am in a window seat and the person next to me is having a LOUD cell phone conversation, there will be a problem. I'm either going to tell the idiot to stfu, or physically remove the phone from their hand and shut it off.! :o

So you have this thing called a phone so you can TALK to people. Even carry on a CONVERSATION. If you can TALK to people, what do so many people live to go back to the time of the TELEGRAPH AND WRITE SHORT MESSAGES

I don't get it.
Me neither. [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif] I work with a lady who texts back and forth with her husband and daughter IN THE SAME HOUSE!!
I guess if you don't get it, you don't get. I text with my son in the same house constantly. Like "Dinner's ready" when son is upstairs on video game and I'm in kitchen. If I call his cell phone, he won't answer because he's in the middle of just about to beat the game or something, so I will have to stop what I am doing and push a number one to leave a message. Then when he gets done in a second he will have to go to his messages and listen. It's so much easier to text real quick and he'll get it real quick, and he can even look at it while he's playing the game.

Also, teenagers move around REAL fast. If I need him, I can text where are you, and he texts back "outside on the deck," and I can go there and talk to him without going upstairs to find out he's not up there and yelling all over the house.

Also, with texting, he can never say, "You never told me to empty the dishwasher/ take out the trash/ get the dirty whites, etc." It's right there in black and white and we both know he got the message. I LOVE it!

He does text me when I'm driving to school to pick him up, saying are you coming? And I'll text yes when I get to a red light. That way he doesn't have to stop yakking with friends to talk to MOM on the phone.

Agreed. It's a telephone, not a typewriter. Reach out and TALK to someone!!
SchoolGirlHeart wrote:Texting can be useful. I can't have my cell phone on at work. My sons can't answer their phone at school. On my break I will often text them about after-school activities, sports practices, pick up times, etc. They can retrieve the texts after school or at lunch and text me back. I'll also send a text if it's important but I know the person won't be able to pick up a voice call on the other end (meeting, etc).
So isn't that what voicemail is for? If you can take the time to view and reply to a text, you can take the time to listen to your voicemails.

Personally, I don't text. Not driving, not parked, not sitting on the couch at home, not never. And if someone texts me (which is dambed rare) and it calls for a reply, I will call their number and *TALK* to them, one human being to another.

What's next? Smoke signals???

-"BB"-
You sound like my fuddy-duddy brother Bob in Alaska. I will text him everything he needs to know in two sentences, and he will call me so I can say the same thing to him, like he didn't just read it. Annoying.

I have an older (60-something) brother Bruce in Calif. who loves texting. It's less expensive -- he has a track phone, pay by the minute, and texts count for one minute. We can say all we need to say in texts back and forth -- "Did you pay such and such a bill for Mom or do I need to pay it?" "I paid it." No need for a 15-minute phone call in which you feel obligated to say more than you need to say. "How are you?" I'm fine, how's so - and so, "what's new with you..." We can do that when we have more time.

Agreed. It's been my experience that the folks who talk too loud and too much on cellphones are also the same ones who talk too loud and too much on airplanes, in restaurants, stores, etc. They seem to think that folks are impressed or think they are important.

And as far as kids go...the fact that I rarely see a kid without a cellphone stuck to their ear or their hand truly frightens me. :-? It's bad enough with adults.

I am putting myself out here to get beat up, I drive & text, email, update statuses all the time.
I highly recommend anyone with a smartphone (blackberry,iPhone,etc..) to go and download Vlingo www.vlingo.com
It is free and it allows you to speak a text message, email,Google search and even update your facebook status.
The more you use it the more it recognizes your voice tendencies so don't give up on it after trying it once and it typed something you did not say(those with strange accents from us southerners). I use it regularly and it hardly ever misses a word. This should be standard on all phones in my opinion.

Ever had someone call your cellphone that's in the same house as you? I refuse to answer. Are folks so lazy that they can't leave the room to actually speak to one another?

As for texts, I can receive them but have never sent one and don't have any immediate plans to do so.

not in the same house, however; Lowe's/Home Depot...I don't really enjoy looking at lumber, there are other items I do like to shop for, or just window shop, tho. Great way to meet at the checkout together !
