Of course it could have as easily beena pirate looks at 7.62 NATO or better yet............... at .50.
There is nothing like a .50 caliber 650-750 grain "pill" to cure that nagging headache. INSTANTLY AND FOREVER!
Somehow a .338 Lapua Mag, (while it works great and as instantly) just doesn't sound as good.

It has been reported that the pirates are now vowing to kill all American sailors who are sailing near east Africa.

They tried again yesterday and the crew was able to fight them off. Tough to fight AK-47's and RPGs with fire hoses....

Only one thing to do... bomb the cities that these pirates are in to oblivion.

Well more or less I don't think the pirates live in cities (unless you are talking about the pirates here in America, ie Madoff, Congress, etc). Fighting piracy on the high seas is pretty much, a catch as catch can running battle that really goes nowhere fast. Like killing a hydra. You chop off one head and more grow back to replace it.
To ultimately defeat them you have to destroy their land bases. If they have nowhere to go, nowhere to hide, nowhere to refit and resupply and/or make repairs, nature will take it's course.
Eventually people are going to have enough of their crap and when they do, it will be a no holds barred and no quarter given situation against the pirates and the people around them. The pirates may threaten and they may actually do some nasty "acts". However any "acts" they further commit, is only another nail in their coffin and given further cause to eradicate them. The pirates are in a known and "relatively small contained" coastal area.
Clearly the Somali pirates are playing out of their league. The smart pirates will call it a "good run", take their profits, cut their losses, and quit the business. Those that don't, oh well...

Gotta love the .50! Reach out and touch someone.
Long range, the next best thing to being there!

Captain Richard Phillips is scheduled to fly home to Vermont today, a sudden but reluctant celebrity after being held captive by pirates for five days followed by a high-stakes rescue mission by Navy SEALS on Easter.
Phillips, 53, is expected to arrive by chartered plane at about 4:30 p.m. at the Atlantic Aviation terminal next to Burlington International Airport in South Burlington, where he will be greeted by his wife and family — and a huge media contingent.

Welcome home Captain Phillips........
Hopefully all crew members will soon be back with their families and loved ones.
I agree with Ravi's earlier post about hitting the pirate bases on land. Unfortunately, Somalia has morphed into a lawless state with no real government. And, like always, innocent civilians are victims of intimidation and torture by these thugs.
A news article the other day referred to a "pirate spokesman" speaking from a particular harbor on the coast from which these groups operate (called "one of several harbors") threatening the lives of Americans. This as "revenge" for the U. S. Navy's heroic disposal of the gang holding Captain Phillips.
I'd support our military using drones and other means to monitor ship movements in and out of these harbors for pre-emptive strikes before the pirates set sail. That same article said that the pirates "tend to avoid" French ships becuase of the aggressive response of the French military forces against piracy. Sounds like a plan to follow.......

These pirates are hitting vessels that are 100 miles offshore, so they are probably using
a "mother ship". Have to start locating and taking out these mother ships.
