..."Coconut Telegraph" and "Volcano" from Buy.com (total with shipping = $18.34.

So tell me, how do these two JB CDs stack up? Are they great, good or only fair?

I have seven of the 18 songs on other CDs (some of them live versions).

My last two JB CD purchases were "Banana Wind" and "Barometer Soup", both of which were excellent.

I'm completing my JB CD collection a little at a time.

<------ personally prefers Jimmy NOT singing live versions. He hits the notes better in the studio, and doesn't shout as much.

I actually prefer the Anguilla version of "One Particular Harbour" to the studio version. It has a lot more energy. I also like the Anguilla version of "Treat Her Like a Lady", but can't compare it to the original because I haven't heard the studio version yet.

I agree. The only thing missing from the studio versions is the energy that comes with the live versions. If he could combine that energy with the polish of the studio it would be great. IMHO...

And "Coconut Telegraph" and "Volcano" are good CDs. both have songs on it that regularly get time on the ipod.

There's also a song on the Volcano C.D. called "Stranded On A Sandbar," which I like a lot, and hope to hear live sometime.

The Volcano C.D. is probably my favorite one from the 1970's, and definately in my top five favorite Jimmy Buffett albums.

I think Coconut Telegraph is one of his best. Studio versions of almost anybody are better than live versions in general. Jimmy does tend to shout the end of his lines WAY too much.

i also agree. it seems to me that starting in the mid to late 90's he started shouting more. if you compare feeding frenzy with tuesdays, thursdays, saturdays its clearly obvious.both are great live albums but vocally speaking he is better on feeding frenzy. the anguilla cds are great because there are more obscure tunes on it and he does a real nice job on them.

as for coconut telegraph and volcano, both are excellent.

My brother in law was going through his brothers album collection and found the Volcano album in great condition. Funny, of the hundreds of albums he had, this was the only Buffett 1. :D

Definitely not on a par with his White Sportcoat through Havana run but still very outstanding listens nonetheless.

Coconut Telegraph and Volcano are two JB CDS that play in frequent rotation in my CD player. Good choices.

I've always liked Coconut Telegraph but it's not as good as the A1A-Havanand-CILCIA-SOASOAS era. It's sort of an end to that super defined sound he achieved on CIL and SOAS with the title track, Weather Is Here, Incommunicado and Growing Older - all Classic Buffett songs. The rest of the album?
Island is a beautiful song.
Little Miss Magic is a nice tune and a nice way to end the record.
The Good Fight is not very good.
It's My Job is not very good.
Stars Fell On Alabama is hilarious and nice.

Volcano is a bit overdone but still a good album.
Fins, of course, is classic and a great song, regardless of its live status, being played as much as Cheeseburger. Volcano is good but it's really not THAT good. It's probably more funny than it is GOOD. It's a good song, I just don't think it's a great Buffett song, which is more along the lines of Treat Her Like A Lady and Stranded On A Sandbar and Boat Drinks. Those three are the best songs on the album. Lady I Can't Explain is almost a throw back to his earlier rocking songs while Dreamsicle and Sending The Old Man Home could have fit on any of his first 3 ABC albums.

Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants is perhaps the most interesting song JB has ever written.

Survive, as nice as it is, is over the top and too produced but it's still a nice song.

Overall, I wouldn't put either album in his Top 5 but they are good albums and certainly belong in the collection.

They're still called albums. I don't know why you said "albums" when they are albums. It doesn't matter what media form they are, they are still albums. Records. And even called LPs even though that has a specific term but it has been long associated with being a new release regardless. 8-tracks and cassettes are albums and records as well. ANY kind of LP/album/record release is.

I've had them for a couple days now. Good records.

My next orders will probably be "Riddles in the Sand" and "Last Mango in Paris". I've had "LMIP" on cassette since it came out (it actually was my first-ever JB purchase, inspired because I liked the single "If the Phone Doesn't Ring"), but don't have it yet on CD.
