The original Fresnel lense from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It was removed during the Civil War to prevent the Confederate Army from benefiting by it. This upset many lighthouse workers as it jeopardized ships and lives. The lense was missing for a century until a dedicated historian began a search for it. Today there are still many individual lenses missing that were stolen or taken when it was abandoned. They are hoping that some will be returned, many have.

Thanks for the post and picture. I am reading "Salty Piece of Land" for a second time. My brother is currently stationed in Iraq and is reading it for the first time. I got the book for him as a Christmas gift. It helps take his mind away from all he is facing over there.
If he enjoys it contact the museum. They have a book and video on the search for the Hatteras 1st order fresnel. It is very similar to Buffett's book. http://www.graveyardoftheatlantic.com/Shop_OnLine.htm
This museum is doing a great job and is close to opening a much larger wing. I always like to give them a plug.

Thanks for posting......I love ASPOL, and wish they'd hurry up and make it a movie before Lena Horne dies....IMHO, she's the only actress who could play Cleopatra.

Thanks for posting that. I have always been a bit of a lighthouse nut and after reading "A Salty Piece of Land", always wondered what one looked like. Thanks for that.
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

I am glad you enjoyed it. I wish there were more prisms in it. If you see one with all of the prisms it is even more special. Over the years people stole prisms and kept them as souvenirs or used them for projects. When they first found the lens there were many more prisms missing. As people hear of their project they send in ones they have. They receive them in the mail or just have them dropped off at the museum. That;s another reason to spread the word, in case anybody knows of the location of any prisms.
