One man's thoughts on the Raleigh show
This was our 2nd outdoor show. Our first was last June in Raleigh. While we had fun in June, it was too damn hot.
On Wednesday, I had the idea to purchase a Premier parking pass. What a fantastic idea. We were about 20 rows back from the first security check. We managed to score a spot next to a little island...with some small trees and shade.
We parked next to a group of people who restored our faith in Parrothead Nation. these people were pros at tailgating. They had everything...and were incredibly polite and generous. We were just 4 people looking to take in the sights and enjoy the afternoon and they certainly made that possible for us. they shared food and played awesome music.
We also were parked across from a wonderful family from Fayetteville. their 2 kids and our one hit it off and played footballand tag for about 2 hours in the lot. Both sets of parents had wondered "What are we going to do wit them for nearly 4 hours?" and, as luck had it, we found out. To the Parker Family: Thank you very much!
Once we got inside, our daughter had a ball. She's almost 7 and this was her first show. We got a nice lawn spot and spread out. We got lucky and some really sedats familes parked to the left, right and back of us. We had no worries about obnoxious drunks. Then...a gaggle of 20-somethings wandered in to camp in front of us. They looked OK though.
Then the show started.
That's when said 6 year old started belting out the lyrics. The "kids" in front of us were amazed.Mind you, this child of ours more or less learned to talk by listening to Buffett music. From that moment on, the group in front of us had a mascot. they made sure never to block her view and did all they could to bring her beach balls to whack around. Sure...they had too much to drink, but these were good kids who were raised correctly and knew not to ruin a young kid's first show. Our daughter LOVED being a celebrity for the evening.
We started walking out during Yellow Submarine. The little one was cooked. We hit the car as "He Went to Paris" was starting. We were about to leave the lot as it ended. But, a parking lot security guy would not let us leave. He blocked us. I rolled down the window and asked if I'd done anything wrong. "No...just waiting for the escort to pass". What?
2 minutes later, we saw flashing lights. Behind the ploice car, a white SUV whizzed past with someone in a pink/red shirt hanging out the window, waving at everyone. Then a huge bus roared past. We looked at each other in amazement. Had Jimmy just waved goodnight to us? HE HAD! that bus pulled out no more than 2 minutes after the song ended. that's efficiency!
We had a great time and the warmth from those all around restored my belief that a true Bufffett fan is not a guy with his shirt off...belly spewing over the top and F-bombs dropping. It's not a sloppy drunk chick who's 1 sip away from peeing herself. It's the tailgaters who offer you some of their spread. It's the family who adopts your daughter and offers her pizza. It's the guy who helps the damsels in distress when their grill konks out (That was me) and it's the 1/2 generation below you who gets it that a new wave of fans is being born and baptized on the lawn and goes out of their way to make sure she has a great time.
Consider me reborn.

Great story about your concert experience. Sounds like a perfect family outing. Better than having this woman standing next to me last year for the Freddy and the Fishsticks show while trying to clap her hands with a beer in each one. I got soaked down to my socks.

Woohoo! I'm glad the PH nation made us proud by you! Thanks for sharing....My friend Bill was possibly in the same parking area as you....the shady grassy area between the regular lot and the VIP lot.....I wonder if you met him as well....He talked about some folks with a tiki bar set up near him as well...nogooddaddy wrote:This was our 2nd outdoor show. Sounds like almost the same spot. It was well worth the $20.sunseeker wrote:Woohoo! I'm glad the PH nation made us proud by you! The little one woke up late today (playing hookey...having been to Summerzcool last night). she looks beat up but still has a twinkle in her eye.
I'd gotten to tired of the drunk a-holes that I'm going to belabor the point and repeat how happy we were with how the concert experience went.

Re: One man's thoughts on the Raleigh show
perhaps it being during the week limited the alcohol consumption somewhat?
I saw one fight in Charlotte. After security had broken it up, I stood in front of the two men and told them that fighting was inappropriate parrothead behavior! The security guys didi everything they could to keep from laughing...

Re: One man's thoughts on the Raleigh show
A group of younger, blazingly drunk, sloppy "women" nearly settled in near us. I gave them a look that I often only use around children or Caribbean taxi drivers. They clammed up and walked away.Trust me...cab drivers in St Thomas can tell you about the look and the non-desire to get it.sunseeker wrote:Well....they made me mad....and they needed to know that their behavior was unacceptable.I even had my hands on my hips as I said it!
And...I'm a drinker and have a mouth that can make a sailor blush. but, there's a time and a place. Around children is neither. Mine, yours or anyone's.
I'm definitely growing older (someone stole my hair), but I only allow myself to grow up when necessary.

Re: One man's thoughts on the Raleigh show
A great story....so glad you and the family had a good time.
And for your night to end with a wave from JB......priceless!
And for your night to end with a wave from JB......priceless!
On most days I say: "Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been...."
Sometimes I can only say: "There is no dumbass vaccine......"
If something or someone gets you down, just remember: "In a hundred years it all won’t matter.........."
