This is actually much worse than Bird Flu. Bird Flu is not easily transferrable from one person to another, the swing flu is mutated and passes easily from one person to another
I'm calling BS here.

more easily transferrable - yes, the mammalian strains are always more easily transferrable
more lethal - no

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health published genetic sequence data Monday morning of flu samples isolated from patients in California and Texas, and thousands of scientists immediately began downloading the information. Comparisons to known killers -- such as the 1918 strain and the highly lethal H5N1 avian virus -- have since provided welcome news."

"the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare."
Yeah, I gotta agree....the Bird Flu killed 6 out of 10 people that were infected, while the Swine Flu is killing less than 1 in 10. Definitely not worse.
On the subject of Biden running his mouth.....what a moron! Sorry Joe, but you don't get a personal opinion while you're in the White House. Save it til you get out of office and then put it in your memoirs.
What he said is the opposite of that the CDC and the White House is saying. I'm sure the NYC fly-by isn't the only thing that's pi$$ed off the President this week, and after the a$$ chewing Joe so rightly deserves, he'll probably need to go to his tailor to have his pant size adjusted.
So much for the White House bragging earlier this week that Joe hadn't stuck his foot in his mouth since February.

again.. I like you, but d*m.. what does this have to do with the topic other than just another political rant? Are people so one or two dimensional that all they can do on any topic on this board is revert to replaying the election and bitching within a page or two of the Original Post?

Christ.

I meant worse, in terms of being transferrable from person to person, not in severity

Shortly after the Vice President spoke on the Today show their resident Doctor spoke to people who called in or e-mailed etc about the flu. One asked if she should cancel her trip to Disney World with her kids. Dr Nancy said if it was her she would not cancel. She also said she would ride public transportation and they showed her at a kiosk getting bbq pork sandwich. She is definitely playing down the panic angle. She mentioned the number of people who die of regular flu every year and that it doens't stop people from traveling, touching money, etc. etc. And she said those masks aren't very effective...especially since a ton of the people you see wearing them have them over their mouths, but not over their nose.

I thought she made a lot more sense than a lot of those who are in panic mode already.

I guess we will see.....

Just to keep this thread on the original topic, all I know is that as of right now two weeks from today my guide dog and I will be in Las Vegas for the May 16 JB show. The swine flu outbreak is all over the news right now, but within a week or less things could calm down and another story will take its place.

RinglingRingling wrote:Pandemic: the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu was a pandemic. The Black Death that wiped out 25-30% of Europe was a pandemic. When you say pandemic, it should mean: look to the right, look to the left, one of those folks is not going to be there if you look again in a month. Think wagons in the streets with people calling, "bring out your dead" and the sky black with smoke from the pyres.

We may have an epidemic right now, or at least a potential one. So far, the number of folks worldwide who are reported as cases are fewer than the number of folks who died last year of normal, regular influenza.
While I fully agree that the paranoia is totally out of hand, it is indeed verging on pandemic under the definition used by the WHO, CDC, etc. Their definition doesn't take into account the severity of the disease, only how far it has spread.

It appears that schools officials are being notified to prepare for a possible early closing. Whether any of this is necessary, I don't have a clue but I read a few personal emails from friends and they all were preparing for the worst. I do hope we look back at this as media mania, but right now all large gathernings for the next 6-12 weeks will be in trouble. We are just getting started is the term I heard today. Jimmy is in a no win situation, if he scoffs at this, he will be painted as any number of things, plus it is his party that is driving the bus, so my guess is he will follow the leader on this issue.

speaking as a member of the media.....

the media has blown this totally out of proportion. 3 million in america infected with typical strain of flu on a yearly basis. of that number, 36000 die.

this strain has infected less than 200 in the us with 1 death.

i am sick of hearing about it

Well, my feeling is that it will take a lot for Jimmy to decide to cancel any shows. Of course, we should be concerned, but we should not be alarmed. If there are those who bought tickets that are scared then they should stay home, but the next leg of this tour is not starting for another 2 weeks. The CDC could declassify this outbreak down to a lower number at any time. I for one think that the media has blown this whole thing out of proportion, and until we have very good reason, life has to go on business as usual. We just have to take care of ourselves as best we can and pray for those who are sick.

PHX leads off the next leg, two weeks from today. I see no reason at this time for Jimmy to cancel. Heck, with all the hype and precautions this may be the least sick (physically I mean) crowd Jimmy's ever had at a show! :o

What will really cause problems are all the people who are somehow mananaging to get prescriptions for Tamiflu when they aren't sick. Behavior like that is what causes these viruses to mutate into something really unmanageable.

It's scary that the trucks delivering Tamiflu to various hospitals, clinics and distribution warehouses have to do so with armed escorts. We truly are our own worst enemy. :-?

Well, I would have said what I did regardless who actually said it, or the letter after his name....it was stupid. The only reason this thread even exists is because people like the VP are saying stupid things, so I thought it was relevant, and still think so.
Whatever......and R2, just so you know, I spell Chris without a "T" at the end

I have a regularly scheduled doc appt week after next and I fully intend to ask my doctor to prescribe Tamiflu for my healthy self. But only because I have to go on a work trip out of the country for over a week, where I won't have access to normal health care. If I get sick from the dambed airplane trip, I want to have Tamiflu with me. Taking it while healthy is dumb unless you have definitely been exposed to the flu (swine or swine-not....)

Your case is understandable, Jen...and you're not taking it unless you feel you've been exposed. I have no problem with situations like yours. I do have a problem with people who haven't been exposed and have NO symptoms whatsoever taking it, and the "survivalists" that are hoarding it. Perhaps we ought to lock them in a room with MRSA, maybe they'll rethink their plan. :o
