Holy crap, looks like we got ourselves a real scandal here!

How much did her socks cost? Her undies? The rest of her outfit? Jewelry? Hairdo?
Dang, you'd think she'd have worn her cheap clothes .... 'cause ya know, poor folks love it when rich folks "slum it" to pretend they're just like them.
In fact, maybe the Obamas should move out of the White House. After all, that's pretty ostentacious in this economic climate. Maybe they can find a nice trailer somewhere in northern Virginia.

Good God, is this what we've devolved into ..... becoming so petty we're gonna nitpick every word, mannerism, item of clothing, morsel of food? Are they're not more important things we can expend our time and energy on? Maybe like use some of it to do something positive?

Personally, when Michelle Obama buying cheaper shoes will cure my cancer, fix my left kidney and other medical problems, bring back my mother and guarantee my son's safety while he's serving his country protecting the wellbeing of all the professional "whiners" and "martyrs" ..... THEN I'll get my undies in a twist. In the meantime ..... THEY'RE JUST A PAIR OF F'N SHOES!

Yeegads . . . How much money do you people spend to support your Jimmy Buffett habits? I know that I spent more that I shoulda (as a "middle class American") to see Jimmy in Waikiki because I couldn't possibly wait until October to see him in Seattle. I don't even want to think about how many pairs of shoes I coulda bought!

She's new at this First lady stuff and probably didn't know that she needs two wardrobes; her "dress up to meet everybody's 'First Lady as a Fashion Plate' role wardrobe and her "dress down so I don't insult anyone at the foodbank" wardrobe. Of course, if she'd been wearing Keds, some of you would be criticizing her for being a phony . . "Jeez, who is she trying to fool, she doesn't dress like that."

If you're so outraged, don't spend a single penny on JB for the rest of the year: donate all that money to your local charities! If you're gonna talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk.

'Bitsy and SPH, I couldn't care less how much she spends on anything, but I stand by my opinion that she prob'ly ought to be a bit more thoughtful about where she wears what, since she's basically "on stage" all the time. Sure, I spend bunches of money on Buffett, but I don't talk about it with my friends who are working hard to make this month's mortgage payment. I just kinda see it as courtesy is all. And for the record, I'm not the least bit outraged about her shoes. Rolling my eyes a little is all. I'm outraged about the way Congress spends my tax dollars.

I hear ya Jen. Its time to send a complete message as to who honestly has the final say. The next General Election, we the people, need to vote out every incumbent up for re-election. Yes we'll lose some good ones. But the message that would be sent would clearly out-weigh the loss. Only then will those in office begin to notice.

Totally agree! When the founding fathers stated this government they never intended on such a thing as a life long politician. WTF is up with someone staying in office for 50 yrs?

Well, I look at it this way: The people at the food bank most likely already know that she's rich. I suspect that few, if any, know how much her shoes cost and even if they did, didn't much care. As with anything of this sort, I think the important thing is that you're THERE, not what you WEAR.

As for Congress, they've been wasting money since ..... well, since forever. And one person's "waste" or "pork" is another person's "important project for our congressional district". The congressman who sponsored a particular bill or funding program is a hero in his local district but a "bacon vendor" to everyone else. But that's just my two cents. (Which I will NOT tax you on, by the way!)

Today the First Lady's husband moved to close a tax loophole, and will "punish" those who try to set up businesses off-shore.

Just back from a 10 day trip to the states and not to just family or something, and wow! have Americans got rude since we left two years ago, or what?

You know, when most people grab a pair of shoes, any shoes, out of their closet, they generally don't think .... 'oooh these are my expensive shoes, I'd been not wear them somewhere cheap'... they generally put on whatever is comfortable!

Not to mention that anyone in such a position PROBABLY does not actually go out and physically buy their own clothes!! I think you would find that everything the last few First Ladies, all of them (at least back to after Mrs. Eisenhower), wear is more expensive than the average citizen wears or buys.

And for people who would spend $500 on 4 concert tickets, to see someone they have seen many times before, to complain because someone else has expensive shoes on the floor of their closet is just crazy.

Fussing about small things, just because you don't like someone and can't find big things about them to fuss about, is petty. Outrage should be reserved for the big things. Isn't there a book that's call Don't Sweat the Small Stuff or something like that?

A "style" mistake is a lot better than a "take your country into an unwinnable war" mistake. This discussion falls right along party lines and if wearing expensive shoes is even a discussion topic, then they are doing something right. What kind of shoes would Cindy McCain have worn if the other side won the election? She would have had even more expensive shoes, but wouldn't have been at a food bank, so no one would say anything.

Generally I would somewhat understand the original post. But at this point, the spending, the general lack of responsibility and everything else that goes along with this presidency and his administration has me to the point I find most of it laughable. There is nothing you can do about any of it until 2012 so hold on to your shorts, its only going to get better.

We have seen our new president appoint tax evaders to key positions, bow before foreign kings, have laughs with Chavez, say he intends to release suspected terrorists in our country when he closes Gitmo, announce to the world that his own country is arrogant, his administration has called our returning veterans potential right wing extremists, not even lifted an eyebrow or shown concern about what the people were protesting when 250,000 + people attended the tea parties on tax day across the country, and the spending, I won't even get into that. He accomplished all this in just over his first 100 days and this doesn't seem to phase a bulk of the population. In the grand scheme of things, her sneakers aren't a real hot topic, with the record to date just be happy she's not wearing some form of footwear crafted from endangered species.
