Woodstock 40th Anniversary

Post by MonumentBeach »

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is planning an anniversary concert with Levon Helm headlining. There are a bunch of other acts as well.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/the ... 9126.story

Bethel Woods is a really neat place if anybody is looking for a fun road trip. The Woodstock museum is excellent as well. We went last year for the Allman Brothers show, checked out the museum, and camped nearby for a couple days.

I have also heard rumors that Michael Lang is trying to plan a free concert in NYC to commemorate the 40th anniversary, however, I haven't heard much on that lately.

I thought about making a "Chip Monck" character in BN Critters once and putting in a brown acid reference .... but then changed my mind. :-)

There will also be a 40th anniversary concert in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. I have the info in my email at home somewhere.

One thing they're trying to do is set a world's record for number of guitars playing, I think, "Purple Haze" simultaneously.

I'll repost what I have when I'm at home & remember.

Gotta disagree with ya there 9. That is a great line up if you happen to remember anything from those days. (And yes I know the line if you remember the 60's you weren't there, WRONG)

Well, my parents hadn't even met when Woodstock happened, so needless to say I wasn't around for it. I don't know anything about any of those bands. I've think I may have heard of Canned Heat and I once saw Jefferson Starship play maybe one song at a free concert I was at before I had to leave. Couldn't tell you anything they've done off the top of my head.

Damn youngens.
Jefferson Starship - aka Jefferson Airplane. Grace Slick. White Rabbit. Somebody to Love. Jane. At the end, dropped the Jefferson part and became Starship and put out the abomination of a song "We built this city". I want to throw up every time I hear that song.
Mountain - Mississippi Queen - It's in Guitar Hero 3.
Country Joe McDonald - formerly Country Joe and the Fish - 1, 2, 3 what are we fightin' for. A true anti-war anthem.
Canned Heat - On the road again - no, not Willie Nelson version.
I can't tell you about Big Brother and the Holding Co./Ten Years After off the top of my head.

Ten Years After - Alvin Lee, great guitarist. I'd Love To Change The World is the song that comes to mind.

Wasn't Big Brother & The Holding Company Janis Joplin's band?

Today's generation might not recognize many of those names immediately. Heck, if I wasn't such a music fan, I wouldn't either. But what has been said earlier is true...these are some of the legends of the original Woodstock. I'm a big Levon Helm/Band fan so I'm really looking forward to that. Canned Heat is also well known for the song "Going Up the Country."

I was born 10 years after Woodstock but I really appreciate the significance of it. I spend a day or two talking about it in my U.S. History class for my 11th graders. This year we watched pieces of the documentary and we had our own Woodstock in the classroom where students brought pieces of 60s music and artwork and dressed in 60s clothing. Well, I should say we recreated it in a way where I wouldn't lose my job. (minus the drugs and sex)

That pretty much says it all right there. Why bother to comment if you freely admit you don't even know anything about the artists playing?

Yeah, it was (I had to google it). They sang the song "Down on Me"; I always that that was a Joplin song (shows you how much I know). I'd probably recognize some more songs by Big Brother and Ten Years After if I heard them. I had a pretty heavy dose of "classic rock" (60s/70s) during my teenage years. It was right after my early 80's rap period and slightly before the heavy metal influence.

Janis fronted for Big Big Brother as singer from 66-68 and then broke off and got her own band geared more towards blues. She was with Big Brother during the infamous Monterey Pop Festival with Ball and Chain which basically threw her into the limelight.
