What were your favorite comic books as a kid?

My own comic-book-reading "career" was fairly brief, only a couple of years or so, from about age ten to twelve or thirteen (I was born in 1968). I stopped buying them because the price went out of sight in a relatively short period of time, from about 30 cents apiece to around 75 or 80 in only a couple of years.

While I was a comic book reader, though, I had two favorites, both DC comics.

One was "Ghosts", which was about, yes, ghosts. The plot of most of the stories in "Ghosts" went about like this: person A murders person B, whereupon person B comes back as a ghost and somehow or another hastens the removal of person A from the roster of the living. Formulaic, but I like spooky stuff, and at the time it sufficed.

My other favorite was "Jonah Hex", about a disfigured post-civil war bounty hunter. I stopped reading "JH" when Jonah got married, had a kid and got mellow. But it was good while it lasted.

I also enjoyed, from time to time, the Green Lantern, Scalphunter, Batman and Fat Albert.

I was more of a MAD Magazine kid. In fact, pack rat that I am, I still have hundreds of old MAD Magazines saved and in protective sleeves (What? Me Worry?).

But I did read Superman comix. And, embarassingly enough ... I also read the Archie comix. I think it's because my young self was enthralled with the incredible shapeliness of Betty and Veronica.

I once created a MAD Mag cover with my son's face on it for a contest run by SURFER Magazine. I also created a cover with my daughter's image (my favorite).
Neither of those won, but the one that I put my dog's image on did win!

I remember reading the original "National Lampoon" issue that surfpirate swiped the idea from — and from the look of it, the graphics too.
Am I OTD or what?

As for comics, I would read literally anything I could get my hands on. Archie; any Disney comics (especially the Carl Barks stories, although I didn't know that at the time); Little Lulu; any Harvey comics (Richie Rich, Sad Sack, Wendy, Casper, etc); Sgt. Rock; Superman; any Marvel comics (Capt. America, Spiderman, Thor, Hulk, X-men, etc); you name it. If it was printed, I'd read it. And I still found time to read 'real' books, too.

started with DC, then started some Marvel.

Really enjoyed the first Handbook of the Marvel Universe series, because it put everything in perspective

I think for around 20 minutes of my life I read Archie. Then I read Ellery Queen Mystery and Alfred Hitchcock. Mostly I read books. For around four years of my life I lived for Nancy Drew and switched to Stephen King when I was like 12yo. My parents clearly didn't care or know what I was reading.

I read now where "Jonah Hex" will be made into a movie to be released next year, starring Josh Brolin.

On the rare occasion I read one it was probably Archie. MAD magazine (at my cousin's house only my parents really didn't like me buying it even though I KNOW for a fact they secretly thought it was hilarious) and then National Lampoon, though I don't consider MAD or NL comic books.

Archie
'Mad'
the cartoons in the New Yorker magazine (does that count?)
Tin Tin -- the booklike ones

I wasn't supposed to be reading comics, so had to sneak it at friends' houses. My Mom disapproved of them.

I was always a Batman fan from the start. Still buy every now and then but the prices are just alittle steep these days. I stopped regular collecting around '92. I enjoyed all the different Batman comic. I tend to be more a DC fan. But I do enjoy Spiderman as well. I always love his wise-a** attitude. I have a 7 yr.old that is really into them right now. I can't wait to get out my collection when he is alittle older. I think he will feel he has stumbled on some treasure. :wench:
