So 'twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter.
I'll bet 'er the butter was barely bitter, but barely worth the bother

Sorry, it doesn't wash. These were the same arguments used to keep people of color (there are violent, closed-minded, racist people in the military) and women (it's for their own protection) out of the military for decades. Those arguments didn't wash then and they don't wash now for gays/lesbians, either. If a noose were to be hung in an African-American's bunk today, every effort would be made to find and prosecute the perpetrator. Violent, close-minded people do not belong in the military. Totally offensive racial and gender-based jokes used to be rampant in the military; they are unacceptable today. Beatings used to happen because "that n***** looked at me wrong." Today, that gets prosecuted. When the leadership of the military makes it clear that violence and offensive comments toward/about gays/lesbians will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted, it will stop.

And that doesn't even mean people will have to agree with or accept the lifestyle, but they will have to keep their opinions from coloring their actions. I once had a commander who was open in his belief that women should be at home, not officers in the military. However, as he put it, "the leadership of this country and military has decided you should be here, and I follow orders." He treated every one of his officers the same despite his opinion on the matter. Even in the military, opinions and feelings don't get legislated. Actions, however, do.

You may if you wish, but I don't know how much good it will do.

I'm so dadgum glad you responded!!! As I was reading the initial post I actually thought to myself that my father wasn't that damn prejudiced. It's not as if I've never seen that type of attitude - it's just that it's been so long and it's so painful to witness.

It seems to me that for some it's been forgotten that the brave men and women are trained and held to a higher standard. To think that a huge majority of the men and women serving couldn't retain their respect and dignity in the presence of someone whose lifestyle differs is really a discredit to the men and women serving.

As for causing an uproar, why should this be an issue like any other that gets mentioned here. I wanted information, because I genuinely did not know about the history of this policy.
Anybody happen to notice that if you pluralize the L-word, the autocensor lets it through?
