Jimmy Buffett fans come out in force to defend Dolphins deal

Post by parrothead3282 »

Found this on SI....

Peter King talking about the new Landshark Stadium

this is on the second page.......

• HERE COME THE BUFFETT E-MAILS. From Desmond of Pittsburgh: "Wow, slamming Jimmy Buffett. Not a good move King. Get ready to hear it from the Parrotheads.''

Not really a slam of Buffett. Just a point that it's pretty desperate when you tie your marketing fate to him. Just thought it was odd, and I will be surprised if it sells many tickets.

• THE BUFFETT DEAL HIT PHIL WRONG TOO. From Phil of Bear Creek, Vt.: "I fully agree with you that the Buffett deal is weird. I think its weird as hell, and makes me wonder about the business acumen of some of these 'professional' football men. But, with that said, I don't think you fully understand Buffett's popularity. Saying he hasn't had a hit since 1977 is like saying the Grateful Dead weren't popular because they rarely made the Billboard top 10. Buffett has a HUGE following. Again, agree with your point 100 percent....but don't diss Buffett.''

Point taken. Thanks.

Do you have a link to where Peter Kind was 'slamming' Jimmy? I looked on si.com but cant seem to find the original article.

4. I think that Jimmy Buffett thing with the Dolphins is weird. What's his role? Playing a few songs in the parking lot? I'm amazed the Dolphins have so much trouble selling tickets and haven't been able to build a constant-sellout fan base in South Florida. It's weird. They have a competitive team almost every year, and they beg to sell tickets, and they use stuff like some unclear relationship with an old pop star whose last hit was (I googled this, so apparently it's true) Margaritaville, in 1977.

"It's something I've always dreamt about -- seeing how we can merge Jimmy Buffett and the Dolphins,'' the Dolphins new owner, Steve Ross, told a crowd in south Florida the other day. Wow. That's a heck of a dream. I never heard Eddie DeBartolo say he dreamed of merging Tony Bennett and the 49ers, or Wellington Mara dreaming of merging Bruce Springsteen and the Giants.

I'm not trying to kill Ross here. It's good that he's trying anything he can to market his team to a fan base that doesn't buy enough tickets. I'm just pointing out what a strange reach it is. Stirring lyrics to the song Buffett wrote that the team hopes will become its theme song. "Kickoff time's approaching, we gotta shut off our cell phones, and get our arms up in the air. We are entering the 'FinZone.' ''

So, I guess we put Peter King in the "doesn't get it" category?

I think you can file this in the Peter King gets football category. If Jimmy advertising on the stadium increases ticket sales by 10,000 a week, then the pied piper's got nothing on Jimmy.

I haven't been on BN much lately b/c of my Mom's health issues, but I think it's great marketing.
Dolphins & Fins just go together regardless of what you think of the beer itself.

It'd be like putting the Cowboys & Lone Star together.
While not the best beer, it's about branding, and it works from my point of view. Image

Jimmy's last hit was "Margaritaville"?

Even if you're only talking singles, what about "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" and "Hey Good Lookin'"?

And if you're talking the WAY more important album charts, JB has had a ton of top ten and top five albums since '77.

King needs to get a new search engine. Or go to http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... qw5ldde~T5

title of the thread is a bit misleading. the fans write to defend Jimmy, doesn't look like (in the two examples listed there) that they are orgasmic over the deal so much as the columnist's inferences against Buffett

But JB sang on "5:00" and even got a CMA award with AJ for it. So I call it "his" :).

The new Cowboys' stadium in Arlington will be officially called, at least for 2009, "Cowboys Stadium".

Bon Jovi performed in Times Square for the NFL Kickoff Concert, or whatever they called it, a few years ago the first time they had the opening game on a Thursday night. I don't remember if he ever did anything specifically for the Giants
