Veterinary group rethinks fish toss in Seattle
By DOUG ESSER – 12 hours ago

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle's famed fishmongers may be tossing rubber fish instead of real ones at a national veterinary association's convention next month following complaints from an animal-rights group.

American Veterinary Medical Association chief executive Ron DeHaven said the Schaumburg, Ill.-based organization had thought inviting one of Seattle's top tourist attractions — the fish-throwers at the Pike Place Fish Market — to the event would be a great "team-building experience."

But after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals raised concerns about the ethics of using dead fish as props at a veterinary event, DeHaven said the AVMA would explore other options, including an alternative PETA suggested: using rubber fish.

Perhaps the fishmongers should toss around broccoli or heads of lettuce.

Although personally I think that overlooks the excruciating pain suffered by the vegetables when the florets or heads are savagely severed from the rest of the plant.

Hmmm, I wonder if broc coli is related to E. coli???

I think the next time PETA has a convention or conference, I think it would be funny as hell if there was someway to have a huge picnic/cookout/luau that would totally surround the place with people grilling steaks, chops, and chicken, and hogs on spits.

All wearing leather vests and fur-trimmed clothing, of course.
God wrote:So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. (Gen 1: 27-30; highlighting mine)
So you see, salads aren't food; salads are what food eats.

Screw that- I want to protest outside with the pictures of pets PETA "rescued" from shelters and then killed.

From being married to a vet and having been to these conferences, I can tell you it is split somewhere near the middle. However those that do eat meat rarely eat recognizable fish or chicken on the bone; reminds them of anatomy and what parts they are actually eating.

A number of vet/vegs choose not to eat meat simply because they deal with sick animals all day. You spend all this time studying everything that can go wrong with an animal, do you really want to hope that the one you are eating was one of the healthy ones?

PETA is more violently opposed to fur than leather, because it's easier to intimidate little old ladies and starlets than bikers.

Actually, man wrote Genesis 1: 27-30 (along with the rest of the bible). I don't think God ever had a publisher. And if He did, He had a terrible agent. Most of the men who did "write" God's "words" had their own "agendum".
And if I had an emoticon for "air-quotes", I would have used it 3 "times" in that last "sentence".

Yes, I know God did not write Genesis, or any other book of the Bible. It's just that the software puts "(name) wrote" when you use the 'quote' tags. I'd much prefer it if it would say "(name) said", personally.

Yeah but 'god' has nothing to do with it.

Most veggies I know don't eat meat because they don't like the way they feel after eating - slow, tired, etc...

I still eat meat but on a day to day basis, not much.

I heard NPR say 'We don't say 'late term abortion' but rather, I think it was, late abortion.

Sooner or later, every thread makes its way down the tortuous path to cannibalism.

I do think it is disrespectful to the families of the deceased fish (our very distant cousins after all) to have the corpses of their loved ones included in this circus-like performance.

How would any of us like it if a couple of great white sharks used our loved ones' remains for a game of water polo?

I am not a vegetarian, but I do acknowledge that when I eat meat, I am cannibalizing the remains of my very distant cousins and this encourages me to treat it as the sacred act that it is.
