Hearing Aids????

Post by creeky »

Hello - long time no see :D (I am busy farming on Facebook - Thanks Deb!!!!  )

Anyway ...

Anyone out there had experiences with hearing aids?

I have just been tested and surprise surprise  I need them. The audiologist is recommending an over the ear one, that has the speaker thing going straight in to the ear, rather than being on the aid and it having to go through a tube ot the speaker in to the ear - apparently this is the best option .. and costs a couple grand more .....

They are expensive here - the ones I am contemplating are $5000 a pair. The cheaper option is $3000 (and no medical insurance covers these costs) .

So appreciate any advice on the over the ear ..... where the speaker is thing.

I am getting "resound" brand ..... and the colour? this colour 8) 8)

I apparently dont have much choice anymore but to wear ......

They had me wired up to two while I was "shopping" for what ones I would buy and it was amazing the difference.

My mother sure is glad - seems her hearing is going due to loud noise when visiting my place and the tv up loud

Hey Jenny,
I've been away from the audiology field for awhile now, so I'm not as up on what's out there. I looked up ReSound on google and saw a pic of what I think you're referring to. From what I've heard lately, I believe that type is getting better results for people than the in the ear ones. My dad has had terrible luck with in the ear hearing aids, I've been trying to get him to look at the behind/over the ear types but so far, no luck.

What kind of hearing loss have you been diagnosed with, and to what degree? Which model are you looking at...the Dot, X-plore, etc?

Timely post...

I'm getting a new hearing aid as well... same brand...Resound :o

But I was told that the hearing aid would be 2500 dollars (US dollars). I'm getting a discount because I'm trading in my older aid....

That said I've been wearing a hearing aid for most of my life (due to a doctor and a stupid mistake ) It is my general opinion that pretty much EVERYONE of the next generation will likely need one by the time they're 40....

The specialist told me that there weren't too many hearing aid for my range of loss and it's got a little more... She wanted me to get two aids as well but my pain threshold is not that great in the other ear...

The one I am ordering is the Dot one ..... cerrise pink in colour 8)

What have I been diagnosed with? from birth ..... non treatable - high frequency pitch loss - getting worse as I get older.

Glorfindel? 2500 for one? you must be getting the "top line" model? Mine is not quite top - they were 7K a pair. I have to get two ... both ears were born not working properly :-?

How in the heck do I stick my mp3 earplugs in then????

Technically I'm only paying about 2000 for it after trade in... It's really because I'm needing a strong hearing aid as well as I get older :(

BTW Jenny how much money does 3500 equal in American Dollars? (I'm too lazy to look up the latest exchange...)

A friend of mine has gone to digital hearing aids. They are custom fitted to his ear. He can adjust the settings so that they act like noise canceling headphones, he can plug his iPod into them and use the hearing aid as an equalizer/filter, he can set them so that it cancels out the sounds of a band in a bar, while allowing him to hear the person he is talking to across the table. I have no idea what the price tag is like but he really likes them.

My mom, sister, Grandmother, and 5 other Aunts and Uncle's have hearing aides. They all wear the over the ear. They tend to amplify the sound better for every one of them.

Be sure to wear them proudly, be sure to explain that you are hard of hearing, don't take anyone's flock for your not hearing them the first time.

Use closed caption on your television, it really does help and tends to make you a better reader. Ensure that your employer assists you with purchasing a special phone for your desk, they have to, you are hadicapped, don't let them talk you out of it.

Use that excuse at every concert, graduation, church event (etc.) you attend!!!!!!!
