Re: Iowa Teen Wins Text-Messaging Championship
right.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

The only skill possibly associated to this ridiculous phenomenon is the ability to develop carpal tunnel syndrome at an extraordinary early age, phjrsaunt wrote:What is the world coming to when people can win SERIOUS money for being adept at TEXT MESSAGING??? What is this TEACHING our young people?
So, parents.... don't be surprised when greater numbers of these kids are still living at parent's house at age 25, unable to afford rent from that fast-food job that they just got fired from... for texting on the job!
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

Texting is silly, but during Hurricane Ike, they were asking people to text instead of calling if possible to keep from jamming the lines.
There were soooo many land lines down so everyone was using their cell phones.
I don't know if that was true, but I did my part.

Now that makes sense to me, very much. But just to hold general, every day, meaningless conversations, does not. But I'm old.springparrot wrote:Texting is silly, but during Hurricane Ike, they were asking people to text instead of calling if possible to keep from jamming the lines.

Re: Iowa Teen Wins Text-Messaging Championship
Testy, testy. Duckett needs to get you a drink.
The 'technical' form we are posting in, yes, can be considered texting. However, many of us do NOT do this in a hand held form, nor do we walk around (without noticing others around us) 20 hours a day. My smilies are just a form of expressing the sentinment of my words, so they are understood better. I will call someone if the conversation warrants it, but it is usually a quick call. I prefer an email, or post on Facebook if I'd like all my friends and family to know what is going on in my life. Which again, can be a technical form of texting. I don't have the common electronic forms of equipment to text, so what I do is from a PC, not hand held.
Oh, and I do earn that salary.
I don't mind the concept behind the text, and most of the reasons. A brief communication. What does bother me is the total lack of proper spelling and grammar, courtesy, and an oblivion that so many people appear to be in when they are in a zone with that electronic device in their hands.

Re: Iowa Teen Wins Text-Messaging Championship
Ahhh. I think (?) I understand now. It is not "texting" which is bad ... it is doing it in a hand held form oblivious to the outside world that is bothersome. As opposed to the clearly superior butt sitting form of texting alone from my desktop PC.
Gotcha.
If I get the urge to communicate while I am walking around mobile, I'll avoid the urge to grab my handheld phone and grab something else instead. Of course THAT would probably communicate another message entirely.
It's a confusing world. I think I'll blog about it .... but then the tweeters probably think us bloggers are windbags. Maybe I'll just sound off in a forum via frowning smiley icons with a few LOLs tossed in for good measure. Maybe even a ROFLMAO. What the hell? Ya know?

I think what was inferred was "as opposed to trying to look down while driving a moving missile of destruction (our cars) at 65 mph".. or "as opposed to holding a conversation face-to-face, while serial texter struggles to ignore the bleating signal that has informed him/her that another innocuous text message has arrived, and practically dare them to simply ignore it."
This butt-sitting form of communication certainly has it's drawbacks as a social "ill", but it still is not nearly as impractical or inconsiderate... or just plain dangerous as the texting practice has become. Last time I checked they weren't passing laws against when you could communicate via computer in your home.
Would you care to blog... or do another cute computer-drawn BN caricature in discussion of this notion?

I'm guessing that for most of us, what we post on BN isn't from a telephone. It's an open forum discussion board, for all the world to see, which is different from texting.
And it would have to be one big-ass conference call to call everyone who reads what we type on BN.
Nice try, but nope.

Good Grief folks ... I'm ONE of you. One of the tweeting, texting and butt sitting posting goobers of the online wired and wireless world. Please don't take my 1:00am posts personally. I am poking fun at myself, because I see myself in your comments (and I can laugh at it).

back in the day...I was darned good at it...and it was on an old Nokia something or other, and that was before it became the in thing to do.
few years back, too, probbly an old couple of arthritic flanges just wouldn't hold up now...
but I was a has been when texting was still somewhat an amazing bit of technology.
