blood sugar

Post by rich_big »

It has been over a year since my last physical. I eat well, no sweets, watch the bread and pasta intake and so on. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week and try to stay in good shape. It has been on my mind to get my blood sugar checked. My mother died from diabetes, so I need to watch it. One of the plumbers came into the shop on Fri, and he is diabetic. I mentioned it to him, he said he has a kit in his truck; he can test me right now. So we do the finger p**** thing and I was at 51. According to his chart, that is low. Very low. He said I might go into a coma. So I made an appointment with the doc, I go on Wednesday. I am going to go with whatever Dr Rosenberg says rather than an ex con plumber with ‘white pride’ tattooed on his forearms. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is 51 really that low that it is dangerous?

Normal glucose levels fall between 70 and 150 mg. Levels typically are lower in the morning, and rise after meals. Blood sugar levels falling consistently above 150 are indicative of hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. Chronic low levels, falling below 70, characterize hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia is a potentially fatal condition. Symptoms of this condition are lethargy, impaired mental functioning, irritability and loss of consciousness. Persistent hyperglycemia results in diabetes mellitus, which is the most common disease related to blood sugar regulation failure. Diabetes can cause eye, kidney and nerve damage.

Why can’t I say PR1CK if its describing poking a needle into my finger to draw blood?

I went to the doc today. He said I am going to die. I have about 50 years left.

He said that the tests I took only show my levels at the time they are taken.
Not 20 mins ago, or yesterday, but right then. So to have one number high and
one low does not really mean that much. The nurse took blood to run a test to
see where I have been in the past 3 months. I call back tomorrow and see what
the results are.

He also said my blood pressure is perfect and when he listened to my heart he
said “despite what everyone tells you, you go have a good heart”.

Your A1C test (the blood test you took) will be a much better indicator for you. The finger um poking is affected by anything you recently ate. It will be different right after a meal. Mine is always highest first thing in the morning.

Congrats on the good heart and blood pressure :D

I called the doc’s office. My A1C is 5.7. If I was diabetic it would be over 6.8. My glucose average is 126, which she said is not high. She said I am not diabetic and I have nothing to worry about. I said thanks; I am going to go have a doughnut and cigarette to celebrate. I don’t know if she thought that was a joke or not.

It also depends on whether your hands were clean and if you used alcohol to clean your finger. If you don't allow it to dry it will give you a faulty reading. Nancy is right about the time you take it and what you have or haven't eaten. Congrats on being "normal" and healthy!!
