That is very unacceptable. I especially dislike the guys that wear tank tops and baseball hats in restaurants.

I dunno. I always make sure to be getting a beer or in the bathroom when the NA is played.

According to this website musicians are NOT required to remove their hats.
I missed that part, but I also just woke up! HA! HA! HA! I will suggest that what you are refering to are musicians who are PLAYING the National Anthum however.

I wasn't at the concert in question, however I think I'm safe in saying that The Coral Reefers did not play the Star Spangeled Banner themselves.

In which case:

A) Jake should have removed his hat!!!

B) For some to suggest that standing in front of 30,000 might be intimidating, Jake's done this a thousand times before. It's not as though he's a fifth grader and the largest audience he's stood in front of was his school assembly and today he's suddenly in front of the masses. He's been there, done that. Jake should remove his hat when the National Anthum is played.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

She never harped on silly stuff like that. It's balls hot down here so I wear sleeveless shirts, tank tops, bandanas and hats a lot. I do know right from wrong though but truthfully the fanciest place I go to is maybe the local mexican joint , Applebees or Bono's Barbecue and I wish someone would say something to me about how I dress there.
My main problem with restraurants is cell phones.

Having a little interest in classic mens fashion, here are the general rules for wearing a hat.

Outside, you take it off for funerals, national anthems (yes, even those not your own), and similar situations.

Indoors: it is NOT the rule that you always take a hat off inside. If you are indoors in a public area, you may leave it on. This WOULD INCLUDE informal restaurants. In formal restaurants, you should take it off. (Gone are the days where better establishments had a coat check) If you can not find a place to set your hat safely, (meaning a good fedora or such) it is ok (if awkward) to wear it. Hats should be removed when entering a private area (office, home...anywhere that is not accessible to the general public or requires an invitation).

Gotta agree with you there....cell phones should be left on vibrate when eating and ignored when they go off. If it is a call you must take, one should excuse themselves from the table and go outside. Cell calls, when taken anywhere in public should be conducted with a low voice and kept short as possible.

My hat thing in restaurants was influenced by my gentleman father. To this day (he's 84) he is proper to a fault. Always a gentleman, always pleasant and always holds the door for the ladies and everyone else. He taught me how to look a person in the eye when speaking and actually listen to them. He would never wear brown shoes with a black belt or flip flops anywhere but the beach. My life is much more casual than his, (I live barefoot most of the time) but when in public I am impressed when I see a man take his hat off at the table. It's all about the upbringing.

I always figured it was an a**hole indicator. Gentlemen removed their hats when indoors; assholes didn't.

The way I see it hats are intended to do one of three things — Keep the sun out of your eyes; keep the rain off of your head; or protect you from falling objects. Any other reason is strictly cosmetic.

So unless the sun is shining so brightly indoors that you need the hat to keep the glare out of your eyes (not very likely), or it's raining indoors (ditto), or you're afraid the ceiling is going to come crashing down (in that case, it had better be a hard hat or a helmet; besides which, what are you doing in there in the first place?) — TAKE THE G-D'ed HAT OFF when you go inside.

I don't give one sterling-silver rat's hindquarter who your favorite driver is, or your favorite team, or where you work, or that "women want me; fish fear me". You weren't born with that hat on; it does come off. So if you're indoors, take the hat off.
(and if you're worried about where to put it, just leave it in your car. It'll be there when you get back.)

Is this really the worst possible nit we can find to pick?

Hell, I forget important stuff all the time when I'm performing. If he'd remembered to remove his hat and screwed up the performance as a result, you'd be all over him for that.

wearing a hat indoors is about as much an a**hole indicator as your tone in this post....... meaning it's not of course

WEll - if you wanted Jake to feel like crap and he reads BN sometimes.... I'm sure it worked and I'm sure he will not wear a hat at the next performance. Having ADD, you all don't want to know the things I have forgotten, including to take my hat off when I sang the National Anthem at a ball game in Jupiter. I was so nervous about singing - I didn't even realize the hat. No one said anything to me but I realized it towards the end when I could see people had their hats off... I felt awful. When I hyper -focus on something - it is very easy to forget other things. I agree with remove hats when NA is played... but I also agree with - cut people some slack when you don't know everything about them or their situation. I also agree the talking is far more rude ... and it happens a lot!

Well there seems to be a lot of variation in the "rules" But I think Jake gets a pass. Several sites say that a musician playing the anthem is not required to remove his hat. Jake puts his all into that anthem, and it is awe inspiring.

One thing I love about going to the minor league ball games at the Dow Diamond is that they have a different local person sing the anthem for each game. Some are really good. Some not so much. But it is always heartfelt.

The first year the Loons had tons of players who didn't even speak Englilsh...and definitely aren't citizens. They were always most respectful during the anthem....not so for some of the fans.... :-?

I enjoyed the anthem, Jake did an awesome job with it.

Musicians are NOT required to remove their hats.

Oh, and the hand over the heart thing is for the pledge, not the anthem.
You only have two options - havin' fun or freakin' out...
