As surprised fans and critics of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin traded guesses behind her decision to resign more than a year before her term ends, the former vice presidential candidate offered few hints at her political future, except to say she'd gone fishing.
Palin has stayed out of the public eye since she made the announcement Friday, but said in a Twitter update Sunday she was looking forward to joining her family as they commercially fish in Bristol Bay. But to many Alaskans, Palin has been off the job for awhile already, acting as a disengaged presence around the state Capitol since she returned from the presidential campaign trail last year.
"She had a surprising amount of disinterest in state government after November," said state Rep. Les Gara, D-Anchorage. "This state has a lot of problems, and she showed a complete lack of interest in solving them."

Not a hippie, but how dumb would it be for me to just throw them in the trash when I've already paid 5 cents apiece for them, and I'm going back to the grocery store anyway, and all I have to do is thrown them all in a large bin and get a recepit to give to the cashier.UAHparrothead wrote:Se Garry you're a hippie after all.Wino you know wrote:I do recycle.UAHparrothead wrote:But it's not just you driving your Jeep or me driving my Jeep, it is a combination of all of us driving all of our vehicles plus coal power plants plus all the other factories. Like I said, you'll either get the cash, or that much discounted from your grocery purchase. (5 cents for each can or bottle returned).
The grocery store I shop at even has their own gas station which you can redeem the coupons at for discount on your gas. (Not really a discount, since you paid for the bottles anyway, but you get the idea).

Re: Palin is stepping down.
In addition to that terrible CO2, those coal power plants provide jobs to the people that work in them and the thousands of coal miners that happen to live in some of the most impoverished areas in the country. I'll bet they wouldn't be happy to hear that you want them to lose their jobs. Besides, over half of our electricity is generated by carbon based power plants. That's a lot of power to replace. Are you ok with nuclear? I am. I live 5 miles as the crow flies from a nuclear plant. You get some pretty foul waste from those things. The rest of the world seems to like it why not here. The great savior Obama even endorses Iran building a Nuclear power plant of their own. Those CFL bulbs are great, especially with the mercury they contain. Just think of all the mercury that will be oozing from the landfills in a couple of years, not to mention the health effects on the workers that make the bulbs. Oh wait they are chinese, as you say screw them America first!! woo hoo.UAHparrothead wrote: But it's not just you driving your Jeep or me driving my Jeep, it is a combination of all of us driving all of our vehicles plus coal power plants plus all the other factories. Now back to the poverty thing

looks like poverty improved greatly as civil rights legislation went through. We took a hit right after the carter years and once again improved after the Reagan tax cuts. Then another slide when welfare reform was passed and signed by Bill Clinton. Poverty rates decline when there are jobs available for the people with the greatest disadvantages.
The National high school graduation rate for sy 2005-2006 was 69.2%, Thats 30% of the graduating population not qualified for advanced education opportunities. I think CO2 emissions are the least of their concern. These are the future poor. Do you want to help the poor? Perhaps the government should stop passing regressive taxes. The most recent, another round of cigarette taxes. Oh wait that was to help people stop right? If these things are so bad then ban them. Oops can't governments depend on them for revenues. Another is the state lotteries...ahhh...live the dream. The states rake 50% off the pot at a minimum. If a casino did that, 1. nobody would go there and 2. the state would shut them down for stealing money. This is another regressive tax on the poor, you don't often see the rich people standing in line to purchase lottery tickets. All the casinos that are popping up everywhere is another regressive tax on the poor. The state of PA authorized slot parlors. Yeah we're sticking it to the rich white guy, oh wait, the rich white guy flies to vegas for the weekend to play the table games. doh foiled again.
I don't hate poor people, actually I hate the way the democrat party enables and encourages poverty. My wife grew up in a poor household. In her time her mother had to pay for their food stamps each week. They were embarrassed to have the assistance. Now its a badge of honor and everything is free. Can't afford Christmas gifts? That's ok there are tons of charities that will take care of your children. In my area the charities advertise for people to register. Of course these impoverished people know where all the 'good' spots are and get there early with their requests. (I have a number of in-laws that partake, I'm not making this up, oh and they are impoverished because they chose not to work) Its easy to be poor now. Go into any "poor" inner city home and you will find cable tv, cell phones and a wide screen. (I used to travel with CATV installers through Chester, PA dirt poor area I've seen it) You want to help the poor? We need more welfare reform. Require any applicant to produce a GED at a minimum after 2 years in the program. At least then they will have minimal skills. After that require that they attend at least one community college class while collecting and maintain a C average. Let the state pay for the class. It shouldn't be a problem since they don't have a job.

I doubt too many did. At least I hope not. I think you'll find people who think it's okay to call female politicians "sluts" are mostly at Palin's end of the spectrum rather than Franken's.Wino you know wrote: I do have to wonder, however, how many of the same mental midgets who think Sarah Palin is a "slut", inept, inexperienced, etc. VOTED FOR AL FRIGGIN' FRANKLIN in the People's Republic of Minnesota!
And yes, I'm sure there are people who voted for Obama because he's black, as well as people who didn't vote for him because he's black (although I suspect most of them would never vote for a white Democrat these days either). If you look hard enough, there are always people who vote for stupid reasons. But do keep in mind that there are plenty of us out there who love America and who also believe health care is a right, not a privilege. These things are not mutually exclusive.

I remember back in the good old days when there was a deposit on glass bottles, they were still thrown out along the streets, only thing was the kids would pick them up and turn them in. Re: Palin is stepping down.
Skibo, I don't see things in black and white, it is not about two mutually exclusive ideologies. Just because I want cleaner air doesn't mean that I want coal miners to lose their jobs. Just because I use CFL bulbs doesn't mean that I want to put mercury in the landfills, btw you can and should recycle CFL bulbs. If we took the time to put down our guards long enough, we might learn something from one another. I know that there is a lot of welfare fraud and there are a lot of people who defraud charities, like churches, but it doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. I am for welfare reform as well. *gasp* I understand the frustration of seeing people pay $100 or less a month for rent while I am paying $585 and yet they have big screens, Xboxs, PS3s, etc. I also know some people who would not be able to feed their kids or keep a roof over their heads without a little assistance. What do we do? I am asking earnestly and sincerely. I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I have my ideas on issues and they range from the liberal to the conservative. Personally, I have no use for political labels they only serve to divide.
One interesting thing I took from your chart was that the dramatic reduction in poverty happened right around the same time as Johnson's Great Society. Is that a coincidence? I don't know.

HINT-it WASN'T Bill O'Reilly or Glenn Beck.
I'll say it again. I think it's funny that many people seem to think a woman who can wear a skirt and get away with it and is pro-life and loves her husband CAN BE A THREAT TO THEM.
Then again, I'm easily amused.
Again, I voted AGAINST Obama because of his beliefs. I don't give a rat's a$$ if he's black, white, or maroon. And yes, I'm sure there are people who voted for Obama because he's black, as well as people who didn't vote for him because he's black (although I suspect most of them would never vote for a white Democrat these days either). And I'm sorry, but I can't find anything that says we're guranteed certain unalienable rights, among them, life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and health care.
I have health insurance because I pay for it. As it should be.
I'm not about to pay for anyone elses. (Not willingly, anyway).
You don't have to look very hard.If you look hard enough, there are always people who vote for stupid reasons.

Yes, and I'll be damned if I can understand why so many people were still behind Smilin' Norm when they could vote for a guy who would honor the legacy of the great Paul Wellstone. Coleman was only the incumbent in the first place because the right-wing slime machine got away with a bunch of lies about what did and didn't happen at Wellstone's funeral, and it's really too bad the voters of Minnesota almost kept him in. But sooner or later there is justice in this world.Wino you know wrote:You don't have to look very hard.If you look hard enough, there are always people who vote for stupid reasons.

The GREAT PAUL WELLSTONE.
Now, God dammit, THAT'S funny.
Now, God dammit, THAT'S funny.
Re: Palin is stepping down.
brad, Actually that big decline I believe is more related to the civil rights enactments and the strength of the American Manufacturing Industry. Problem here is the law of unintended consequences, if you eliminate coal fired power plants, coal miners lose their jobs. Where will they work? Appalachia doesn't have a lot of opportunities, it never really did. Sure the CFL should be recycled, but we are dealing with a disposable society that won't recycle cans and plastic if given a container. There are people in Philadelphia that even after given a smoke detector can't keep batteries in it. We hear of tragedies here too often of a house that burns without a functioning smoke detector. Do you really think these people would recycle their CFL's? Sometimes you just have to let Darwinism kick in on some people. People should be given the opportunity to take care of themselves, if they won't then not my problem. Of course exceptions are available for the handicapped. Now there are societies that would just let the handicapped die or kill them, I guess that's what makes us civilized.
Personally, I don't think you can even elaborate on what you think clean air is. CO2 is a naturally occurring compound, it is not poisonous to humans, we even exhale it. Trees love it, actually need it. Its in your coke and beer, unless you drink Guinness. Now if you don't like sulfur dioxide, and some of the NOx's yeah, I'm on board with that. But the cap and tax plan is geared towards CO2 only. Follow the money trail on this CO2 thing. that's what it is about. The federal govt will be pulling in a lot more money giving the govt more power and oh, Algore will profit nicely with his firm which will most likely take part in the carbon offset bartering.
I agree with you that there are health issues, I don't believe the air is a major contributing factor to the asthma and obesity that plagues our country. These kids could be breathing pure oxygen and they would still be fat and asthmatic, ADD is a problem Autism is up and air and water pollution is down, way down. Our livestock is pumped up with steroids and antibiotics, our fruits and vegetables have been genetically altered and poisoned with chemicals, our a pill will cure anything drug culture has now polluted the ground water supply both underground and recycled with disposed pills and even through the chemicals excreted. Plastics have been linked to some health problems in infants. Maybe more of these health problems are related to everything but the air we breathe?

So what exactly qualifies as a marketable profession?Garry wrote:If someone else feels their health insurance, or doctor visit, is too expensive, why should I be obligated to pay for it just because I was motivated enough to get myself into a marketable profession to be able to take care of MYSELF?
I was a teacher...I always thought that was it was a profession where you could take care of yourself. My out of pocket expenses for my healthcare premiums was over $11,000 a year. And that was for 90/10 coverage. So I was also responsible for 10% of every bill....and I went thru some very serious health issues. That's a hell of a lot of money. No one I knew outside of my coworkers paid anywhere near what I did.
Apparently teaching isn't a marketable profession. Who knew?
I'm not saying anyone else is obligated to pay for my health care. But something sure as hell needs to be done to make costs equal and reasonable. I don't really care WHO does it, as long as it's done.

I know that when I lived in Knoxville I read a news report that the air I breathed was like smoking 2 cigarettes a day and much of that was due to the coal-firing power plants and they geographical placement of the city. I know that the creeks and rivers in my area reek from the chemical run-off and I sure as hell wouldn't eat a fish caught from a local waterway. I know that the percentages of children with asthma increase when in contact with industrial polluters. I know that I want my children to breathe cleaner air and swim in cleaner water than I have now.
