So what exactly qualifies as a marketable profession?
A "marketable profession", to me, is one in which you don't necessarily get rich, or even make a lot of money, but one in which a person could get a job SOMEWHERE.
That description seems to fit my profession, I'd say.
And when all is said and done, the fact that I'm not "rich" is the fault of nobody but myself.
It's up to each of us to take advantage of any opportunity that comes our way, and you either do or you don't.
I knew when I first got into the law enforcement profession many years ago I'd never become a millionaire, but also knew if I kept my nose clean and lived within the law, I'd always have a job somewhere, and have a job with some decent fringe benefits.
I was a teacher...I always thought that was it was a profession where you could take care of yourself. My out of pocket expenses for my healthcare premiums was over $11,000 a year. And that was for 90/10 coverage. So I was also responsible for 10% of every bill....and I went thru some very serious health issues. That's a hell of a lot of money. No one I knew outside of my coworkers paid anywhere near what I did.
Apparently teaching isn't a marketable profession. Who knew?
I'm not saying anyone else is obligated to pay for my health care. But something sure as hell needs to be done to make costs equal and reasonable. I don't really care WHO does it, as long as it's done.
I ALSO assumed that a person with a teaching certificate would always be gainfully employed.
The only thing I know for sure about public school teachers is that they're grossly underpaid. (Especially for having to put up with some of the little bast.rds that they've been entrusted to do the impossible with-educate them.
I'm sorry for your health issues, and I'm sorry if you feel I don't care.
It's not that I don't care, but I'm 57 years old and DON'T have the body of a 30 year old. Meaning, my health will very soon be an issue too, and, thankfully, I was able to ensure that I'd be taken care of when that time does come. Charity begins at home.
I know you don't expect anyone to "pay your way," and, hopefully, you'll be fine. Yes, as I said before, it's RIDICULOUS to have to pay $10,000.00 for less than a week's stay in a hospital. That's why I chose to do what I can about it, and that was to invest in a good health care plan, and make sure I could get a job in a profession that offered decent health care plans.
So, while I don't make $100,000.00 per year, I'm able to make a decent living and enjoy the fringe benefits. It didn't happen from me walking into the Bendover, Iowa police department and telling the schlub at the desk I want a job so I can pay for a fancy car and live in a fancy house and have my medical expenses taken care of.
I went to the academy(s), studied criminal justice, police science, and the courses offered in other areas of the profession, i.e., investigations, traffic accident recreations, hostage negotiations, etc.
It wasn't easy, but nothing in life that's worth having is ever easy.
It boils down to "How badly do you want it."
Before I make my next statement, let me make this disclaimer:
I'M *NOT* PUTTING YOU INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORY.
But I'm always amazed at people who say they can't afford decent health care, but, yet, you go to their house, and you see six or seven damn flat screen HD T.V.s, a computer with all the bells and whistles, a $40,000.00 car in the driveway, two or three MP3 players, furniture that looks as if it's just off the showroom floor, and so many other of life's amenities.
With some people, it's simply a case of misdirected priorities.
And to those people I say, I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR HEALTH CARE!!!
Again, I'm really sorry for your own health issues. I wish there was something I could tell you or offer you.
Should I send you $1000.00?
Would that help?
What'll happen when that money is gone?
If that's not going to help you, what will? GOVERNMENT taking over the health care system? You're an intelligent lady-believe me, you DON'T want that.
I don't know what else I can say.
I honestly wish you the very best, whether you may think so or not.
