Salty Piece of Land Song

Post by RainTree »

OK, we've discussed this before.
But MAYBE if we all try, we can let the Jimmy know how much we want this song recorded!
Maybe on the new CD he's working on???

It's already been recorded as a free CD single with hardcover copies of the book!

Many of us did not obtain the Free CD with the book.
Why does this great song have to be limited now that the book is several years old?

We like the song and would like to see it on a commercial CD - so that more can enjoy one of his original songs.

My understanding is that it was an outtake from the License to Chill sessions. Wasn't it?

somewhere down the road, JB should release an outtakes album of songs. Stuff that never made it to albums. might be sort of fun

For my purposes, I edited the MP3 tags to include it on my Beach House On The Moon album. To me, the song styling, chords and instrument arrangements sound more like a cut from "Beach House On The Moon" than anything he was doing during License To Chill. I doubt that it was a cut from BHOTM, however, because the CD was released five years before the book was published. But still, it sounds like it should be more alongside Permanent Reminder, BHOTM, and other cuts from that CD.

It was recorded for License To Chill but he held on to it for releasing with the book. Wasn't it available through iTunes at one point?

It is more along the lines of his recent title tracks - Beach House On The Moon and Far Side Of The World. I like those songs and how they are long and loping and very melodic. ASPAL would have fit in well on LTC, at the end of the record especially, which is how I have it on my own version of LTC (I removed Conky Tonkin' and Simply Complicated to tighten the album up).

You can still find the books with the single in it. I've seen them. They're out there. What's funny about it is it didn't register on Billboard for having been a huge selling single.

Something that would include early songs (Sun and Tan Band), 15 year old girlfriend, maybe even live covers that he's done over the years, cuts from the boxed set that weren't released until then.

An album of all the outtakes would be nice. He has leftovers from the Beach House sessions as well. If you included what was on the BBBB box set, it might be a double album's worth of tunes.

That would be cool.

a salty piece of land is one favorites and i think one of his better crafted songs this past decade. it deserves to be on a major cd release and should be played in concert. i hate when he releases great music and doesnt play them in concert i.e. the salty piece of land tour and the song was played maybe 2xs.

i've said it before to, and outtakes cd would be incredible.

When I heard SPOL the first thing I thought of was the tune BHOTM.

It certainly does have that feel to it, it would be a nice song to hear after the title track of that album

At the very least, it should be released as a downloadable mp3, either through Amazon, or Mailboat, or whomever (whoever? I never get that right), so fans who didn't get the chance to get a 1st edition of the book have a chance to listen to it.

I wonder if there are maybe some publishing rights issues with it? You'd think it have been released at the very least as a download by now, but maybe issues with the book publisher are holding things up?

That's just the thing - for that tour the song was NEVER played. He's never done ASPOL live with the band on tour.

I never really thought about that, but it's true. He never did play it live. Be a great encore song, even an opening song

I've always loved this song too. Just out of curiousity, I checked the set list database.

Looks like the only time it's been played live (other than the actual SPOL "show") was on the Today Show.

12-08-2004: Theatre for the Performing Arts - New Orleans, LA
11-30-2004: Today Show - New York, NY

I really liked someone's description of this and Far Side of the World being "loping"-that really fits well. :D
