Jimmy, Men's Journal, Caribbean Rum

As was posted here, thank you B'Ners, Jimmy was featured in an article in Men's Journal recently. In that article he talks about he likes "a fine Caribbean rum, coconut water (not the coco-lopez stuff), and lots of ice." Curiosity got the best of me. I found the coconut water, but tell me something Parrotheads....what constitutes a Caribbean rum? I'm not after a "fine" Caribbean rum because I'm pretty sure I can't afford a "fine" flavor by Jimmy's standards. Is it Myers? Is it Bacardi? Is it Cruzan? Captain Morgan?

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

(I may have misquoted Jimmy, but I think I got the point across)

Scratch that...found a bottle of Appleton something or other (some sort of Amber) in the bar downstairs.....glass full of crushed ice, two shots of rum, fill with coconut water....surpisingly refreshing....but seems like it needs something. Anyone know anything different, please advise. Always up for a nice rum drink by the lake, pool, beach.

Enjoy.

Might I suggest the classic Mai Tai

2 oz Appleton Estates Extra (the squat bottle, not the tall)
1 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice (key lime, if you can get them)
1/2 oz. Orange Curacao
1/2 oz. Orgeat (almond syrup. Try a coffee shop for Monin brand)
1/4 oz. Simple syrup

Combine in a shaker full of crushed ice, shake for 30 seconds. Strain into glass with fresh crushed ice. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint (optional, but adds aroma) and use a straw cut down low (so you can smell the mint).

Worth the hassle....trust me.

I was thinking... you forgot the lime!

And Frank, the water from a coconut in the grocery, or Whole Foods.

Enjoy, everyone!

You can usually find coconut water in the Ethnic aisle of the supermarket. Be warned- it usually comes with chunks of baby coconut in it. They're like firm jelly. I like them.

Angostura 1919 would be good in it. You should be about to find a bottle for under $25 for a fifth.

I tried it with Mount Gay Eclipse and Zico coconut water. Took some getting used to, but I have to say it's a nice occasional break from my usual Mount Gay and tonics. You can get Zico (or similar brands) at most health/natural food stores, and usually in the natural foods section of your local grocery store.

I was able to find coconut water at our local grocery but it did take a little searching. It was on the isle with the ethnic foods. I am not fond of the little chuncks of coconut in it because they keep stopping up my straw but the drink itself was very good. I tried it with a dark rum and a light rum. I like the dark best but I am a big Myers fan.

Anyone know of a brand of coconut water that does not have the chunks? And where you can find it?

Zico or Vita Coco seem to have very little (if any at all) chunks. I have not come across any in my drinks! You can find these brands at WholeFoods or the health food area of some grocery stores. If you go to Zico's website, you can search where Zico is sold in your area. Hope this helps.

Going searching for coconut water today. My favorite drink has always been dark rum and seltzer water with lime. This could easily be a new love. :wench:

When I made this I added just a couple of mint leaves and it was great :D (I did not have the Zico but another coconut water)
