Also, as far as covering the Beatles goes, Jimmy has been very supportive of his band members' individual efforts, showcasing Mac and Nadirah, etc. Well, Peter is currently doing a "Beyond Abbey Road" Beatles interpretation show and has an album coming out soon, so maybe the Beatles covers are a nod to Peter's work...

Quite possible Jen. I think Jimmy just covers songs he likes. I have to agree it doesn't sound that great over RM though. I haven't been to a show in 2 years. This year I was in South Carloina when he played Great Woods. I really miss the Labor Day show.

So, let me see if I can boil your argument down to one sentence:bonefish wrote:Been looking at the set lists as I prep for my Chicago and Wisconsin upcoming shows and noticed that at almost every show this year, JB is playing 'yellow submarine' by the Beatles during an encore. UGGGGGHHHHH
Not only do I not like the Beatles, but I absolutely hate that song. No particular reason, just don't like it one bit. I'm afraid after a great 2+ hrs of JB and the CRB, that song is going to taint my experience since it'll be one of the last ones I hear.
SOMEBODY HELP ME!!
If he asked me for 2 encore songs, I'd request
1) Cowboy in the Jungle
2) Cool Change (by The Little River Band-that's a song I'm actually surprised he hasn't covered yet.)
I don't like this cover song so I'm going to request another.
Did I get it right?

Would rather have a JB song, but Yellow Submarine is fun at the concerts.

That's what I do during "Let's get drunk and screw". I'm not a prude or anything, just always thought that song sucked.mikemck wrote: those who don't can go get a beer.

I don't mind JB playing a couple of covers, but I'd rather he reach back and play more stuff that isn't on the 'must play at every concert list'. I'd love to here something like "West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown", "Love in Decline" or "False Echoes"

Re: Who else here hates "Yellow Submarine"?
I've always felt that an artist if free to play what they want in concert, and the fans will respond by coming back next time or not. Jimmy seems to like paying tribute to musicians he admires, and there is much to admire about the Beatles. He does a lot of covers in his concerts and there are many I could point to that I like a whole lot less than this one-I actually think they do a pretty good job with it.
Would I let my dislike of a song (and I don't dislike this one) ruin a concert for me---no way, no how!
Enjoy it while you can!

Re: Who else here hates "Yellow Submarine"?
I will say that when they first started playing it this year, it sounded really odd and almost like they were singing off key. But last night sounded like they have it a bit more 'together' now. It's definitely not one of my favorite covers, to be sure, but I don't think I'd say that I hate it. Evidently it's one that Jimmy really likes and enjoys doing, so hey.. I say let him do his thang and let the party continue.

You have to see it in person and catch John Lovell doing his dance. The band clearly has fun doing it and that makes it fun to hear.
And anyway, it's his show, he can do what he wants, it's only one song.

Re: Who else here hates "Yellow Submarine"?
Might I be permitted a little input on this?
Not meaning to pee on anyone's cornflakes, but bands break up all the time. The touring lifestyle gets to be too much, so concerts become fewer and further between. And every performer will someday take that final curtain call, and play their command performance at the Pearly Gates.
You can deny it all you want, but the time will eventually come when we no longer will have the opportunity to see/hear Bubba performing; live, in studio, or anywhere else — except for the material he has already released. Up until that time, I will be perfectly happy to hear/see Jimmy live in concert and perform whatever he thinks will make a good show. If it happens to be "Yellow Submarine", fine. If it's something from his early years, great. And if he someday decides to dig into the Barry Manilow, or Frank Sinatra, or even the Ramones playlists for a cover; well, it will be 'interesting' to see what results. It really doesn't matter.
I suppose I'm saying we need to enjoy what we've got while we've got it. Once it goes away, it's gonna be gone for a long, l-o-n-g time.

I guess I was too far away in Frisco to see that (or it was too much tequila...?ScarletB wrote:You have to see it in person and catch John Lovell doing his dance. The band clearly has fun doing it and that makes it fun to hear.

And I agree, the man can do what he wants, it surely didn't keep me from dancin' or enjoying the show.

looking4OPH wrote:Not my favorite. Not a big Beatles fan. I too wish he would reach deeper into his own stuff before doing 2 Beatles covers (Cinci last night). That said, won't let it ruin the concert for me.
I heard them practicing Rocky Raccoon during the sound check and was hoping they were gonna play it in Yellow Submarines spot. I'm glad he played it though. I was lovin just hearing it out where we were. It sounded like they were trying to learn it or just playing around with a song to get the sound right. I AM a Beatles fan, but Yellow Submarine may be their worst song, so Jimmy doing it does not excite me at all. However, when you are at the show you still sing along and have a good time with it. I never liked Margaritaville, but every year I'm out there singing along shouting SALT along with everyone else.
I am like many who would prefer he didn't do any covers, but obviously that's not going to happen. He's been doing covers since the day he started. Now it's just cool when you are lucky enough to hear something noone else gets to hear at other shows like John Prine last year and Talking Heads the year before at Riverbend. This year we got Rocky Raccoon.
So either s*** it up and enjoy it or make a break for the bathroom and hjope to hell you get back in time for Tin Cup Chalice (or whatever he ends with which half the time is either something he's not doing regularly or personalized to the venue he's playing).
Got to stop wishin', got to go fishin'......

With apologies to Lennon, McCartney and 'Bits ........
At the show where I was scorned
Was the man who came to sing
And encore’s end doth rued my night
That damb song ‘bout submarines
So I vent out on BN
Please don’t taint the show I’ve seen
At encore’s end please do not sing
That damb song ‘bout submarines
Chorus
Gawd how I hate that yellow submarine
Retro 60’s themes, yellow submarines
We all hate the damb yellow submarine
Beatles cover themes, yellow submarines
And my friends we are so bored
Many more of them went out the door
Still the band begins to play
Chorus
Gawd how I hate that yellow submarine
Retro 60’s themes, yellow submarines
We all hate the damb yellow submarine
Beatles cover themes, yellow submarines
[Full speed ahead, Mr. Lovell, full speed ahead!
Full speed over here, sir!

Aye, aye, sir, sing!
Encore! Encore!]
