Update from Vicki's daughters:

We are happy to report that Mom has been the most popular person in the ICU lately! Her niece, Macklyn and friends, Joan and Pam stopped by on Friday to visit. Sandy Lavake, Mike Marshall, and Janessa and I all stopped by to check on her today. We are thrilled that she is looking (and seems like she is feeling) 100% better than she did on Thursday....so slowly but surely she's turning the corner!

She seems much more alert and able to communicate better even with the breathing tube in. Her mouth is terribly dry and she will constantly ask you for water when you visit. Please ask the nurse or RT to swab her mouth for her. We don't want to get carried away and have too much water going down her throat while the tube is place.

They have been able to come down on her nitric oxide but have not been able to come down on the oxygen yet. They continue to take it slow and steady. She is aware that she could be on the ventilator for several more days.

She does have her right hearing aid in now! Janessa was able to get them cleaned, tested and learn about the settings from an audiologist on Friday. We tried to put the left hearing aid in too, but because of the way she is laying, it would just give feedback from pushing against the bed.

We also told her that she now has her own website and about all the messages and kind words she has received in the last week. She can't wait to be able to read them!

A big thanks to everyone who has crossed their fingers and held their breath with us during this roller coaster week!

I had a business appointment in the area so I stopped and saw Vicki for a few minutes today. She was awake and tried to say a few things to me, but I couldn't make out most of it around the ventilator tube. I just gave her a Fins Up and told her to hang in there, and that we were counting on her to be there May 22nd. She seemed to understand everything I said and she did say thank you for coming.

She's a fighter, no question about that.

Time to crank up the phin power ...

While the ventilator was removed yesterday and she was able to breath on her own, a mask was used to help her take deeper breaths on an off throughout the day. The mask was removed last night and she did pretty well last night and this morning. When the doctors came around noon, they said she wasn't getting enough oxygen and would need to wear the mask or have the breathing tube re-inserted. They (the doctors and Mom) decided to put the breathing tube back in. The tube should be in for a few days, until they can get some more fluid off of her. The more fluid she gets off of her the easier it will be to take deeper breaths.

I stopped by and saw her for a few minutes this morning, while she still had on the mask. I asked her how she was doing and she said it was a miserable day. I told her to hang in there and that everyone here was looking forward to seeing her May 22nd. She said OK.

A better update ...

Both me and my sister Jennifer were out at the hospital today for a visit. Vicki was in good spirits. Her doctors came by and spoke with us and said that she is doing very well. They were able to get more fluid off and are continuing to work on that. They say the breathing tube should be out in a few days. She is continuing to do physical therapy each day and is getting stronger. Today she was able to sit on her bed side for about 30 min and was able to stand up with assistance. Please visit if you can, she loves when people are in the room to entertain her, talk with her or just catch her up on daily events.

I went and saw Vicki today, and spent the better part of an hour visiting with her and her family. She really is looking a lot better and even joking around some, and hopefully she'll move out of ICU to a regular cardiac room this week. She still has a long way to go, but she did want me to thank everyone at BN for all the Phin Power and support. She gave me a fins up as I was leaving the room, and she wants her margarita frozen with salt in Frisco.
