iPod/MP3 player question

Post by txaggirl91 »

On the way home from Chicago, the flight attendant dropped my drink in my lap. Some of it got in my iPod and now it isn't working.. grr....

I need to get a replacement player. If I get an MP3 player rather than an iPod, will the songs I bought with my iTunes transfer to my MP3 player?

Has anyone done it? I have read conflicting things on the net about it. Some places say I can and others say I can't....

Janice, I don't know the answer to your question but before you give up on your iPod, have you put it in a ziploc bag with rice for a few days? sometimes that will rescue it.

The only way I've found to do it is to burn the songs to a cd from iTunes and then transfer them to another MP3 player. It's a PITA if you have a lot of songs.

iTunes files are not in mp3 format, they will play on ipods only. Another reason that I am not crazy about apple.

Whenever I add music to my hard drive, I always add them as a mp3 or wav file, then add them to my iTunes library. iTunes converts them to an mp4 format.

Since this is a family forum a I will do my best to refrain about any further comments about the spilled drink on your lap.

you can convert songs to mp3 format inside of iTunes EXCEPT for songs you have purchased from the iTunes store. to convert songs you've purchased you need to burn them to a CD then re-rip them back into iTunes and then you can convert them.

you can also try sending your iPod back to Apple for a new battery. they then send you back a refurbished unit with a new battery. cheaper than a new one.....

why not just get a new iPod instead of a mp3 player?

I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

I believe that you can actually burn them to a virtual cd instead of physical media and then rip them back into iTunes. That way you don't need 1 million cds. But, that's still a pia. I'm in the process of doing some of this myself.

Janice - I too am trying to figure out what to do for a mp3 player. Everyone loves their ipods and they have advantages but I'm not thrilled about the whole m4p/m4a file format. I really just want a simple device that can hold ~80GB of mps3 and maybe have a radio. I don't need it to play videos, make phone calls or do my laundry. I'd be curious to know what you decide on (if you can't get your current one working).

I have all my music files in MP3 format and I have an IPOD.... and have no problems with transferring songs from player to player.

Songs you have already. (from MP4, M4A, etc)
1. In the Name/Artist/Album band. Right click on the band and go down to Kind. Click on Kind. Sort by kind. This will tell you which songs are M4A/MP4, etc.
2. Highlight those songs. Right click on ANY of the grouped songs. Highlight convert to MP3.
3. Itunes will automatically convert for you.
*These songs must not have been purchased from Itunes (they are locked... burn to CD, then re-rip to itunes)
This will keep the songs on your Itunes as MP3 and not convert them to MP4/M4A.

Songs you import from CD (to MP3).
1. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences.
2. General Tab. Click on Import Settings.
3. Click on import using MP3 Encoder/ High Quality settings.
4. Click Ok twice.
This will import songs as MP3.

You should not have problems from jumping from player to player if they are MP3.

Hope this helps.
