I get what you are saying. Funny how I've heard a number of people (online and in person) hold on to that whole "if I ever need a teleprompter....." comment. Big deal. Now, if he starts lipsynching 100% of the songs, I may reconsider buying tickets.
Personally, I think the longer that you have seen Jimmy perform, the stronger the desire to remember him as he was, when he was young, vital and kicking ass onstage. By comparison to his 1994 Fruitcakes tour (some fifteen years ago), the show I saw Wednesday night was a homogenized, Vegas-style parody. We're sorta getting the "fat Elvis" version of Jimmy Buffett, if you know what I mean.

Look, if Jimmy is delivering the show you want to see, I'm totally cool with that.

However, the way I see it, somewhere in the past ten years, that show has disappeared into history.
sadly there is truth in that and that goes for any performer or athlete. some things have always been there like "senior moments" i.e., coming in early, late, or singing the wrong verse at the wrong time. things like that didnt and still dont bother me because its a "live show". teleprompter or not he is in front of thousands of fans and im sure its easy to get lost at times.unless he wants to be a robot and just read off the teleprompter every night and have all his in between songs banter pre-written. what bothers me is that he doesn't play enough of his own great music and depends on the same songs from each album.dont get me wrong i still love the shows but i do look back at old setlists from the 90s and cant help but wish i saw him when he played more of his own music. if it ever gets to a point where i don't enjoy going to the shows i'll stop.

I understand what you are trying to say, basically that he isnt the same now as he was 30 years ago. Now, I am only 33 years old, and have been going to concerts for the past 8-10 years. While they may not as good as 30 years ago, they are great to me, and seemingly to 99% of the crowd that is there.

If you reason for not going to see Jimmy anyway, is because he started introducing Five O'Clock Somewhere, the song before he was supposed to play it, I have to say that is a very nitpicking reason not to go to see Jimmy anymore. And especially nitpicky when you are talking about someone 'losing thier faculties". The guy made a mistake, big freakin deal
Seriously, it's not like he was DROOLING or anything!

Maybe the show started 15 minutes late, because Jimmy got lost on the way to Jones Beach.

Just out of curiosity, how come the phrase, "don't get me wrong i still love the shows..." always manages to pop up whenever someone is remotely critical of JB? What is it, a sin to try and inject a little objectivity into the discussion?

At any rate, I'll leave JB to the droves of the converted.

I do want to understand your point...I really do.
Your comments remind me of a friend of mine who knew Jimmy back in the early Key West days when he wasn't a big star. He tells stories of a guy who would beg bar owners to let him play, and, like everyone else in those days, was always in search of a sponsor for his next meal. A couple years ago, I asked him to go to a show with me. His response was, "You want me to pay $150 to see JIMMY BUFFETT?!?!? He!!, I think the guy still owes me $20." My friend remembers the Jimmy he could hang out with and party. The same guy who only a couple years later would throw a pizza into the audince and hit Barbara Walters. Yes, that guy is long gone. But, we still love the Jimmy who continues to move us with his songs and transport us to a better place.

Overall, Jones Beach is less stressfull for me. Well, the Belt Parkway is the only exception to this. Those drivers create some colorful fatal accidents.

Rasppy and I sat under the upper tier, so there was a wall behind us. No one to scream sit down. Plus what rain?

The seats are tight, so it's kind of hard to move standing when the white man's overbite dance is on all sides of you. I usually get up and do the moog dance for a few songs. I don't do that as much as I did 18 years ago. If someone is standing in front of me, I just say to myself they are having a good time. No big deal. I either stand or just sit back.

I agree with you dude! anyone who complains about Jones Beach should go to either Camden or Philly! Last time I was on the lawn in Camden a woman squatted down where she stood and peed in the grass. and then a guy next to me said that even a cat would have the class to cover it up, and a fight ensued.

We had a friend who was able to save us a parking spot until 3pm, that was just totally awesome. Thanks Jeanie! and the parking lot crowd was great! from Jimmy and the Parrots to the Coral Reefers signing autographs, it was a great time for us. We were Jones Beach virgins, and will gladly go back there again! Bring on those blue cups!

People who are sitting are not blocking YOUR view, the way the six-and-a-half foot guy and his short date, with their heads together half the concert, in combination with the seven-foot guy next to him, were blocking mine. When people sit, they are more equal in size.
I would like to see the STAGE, and I hardly even get to see the screens! And that's when I'm standing, all five-two-and a-bit of me. Just bobbing and weaving around other people. Dancing when I can...

I have had no choice about where I'm sitting when I use TM, and this time I had club tickets, and they were pretty far back, too. If I could be closer to the stage, I would be. But there would probably be someone bigger in front of me

And one more thing. Not everyone CAN stand up for the whole concert. Some places those floors are so steeply raked you get cramps in your feet, toes and calves. And some of us have very sore feet or gimpy knees, while others are just plain exhausted from a day in the sun, standing and walking and drinking. (Sometimes it's all three, and no, I'm not giving up the PH life just because I'm getting older!)

I love Jimmy, his music and his shows, but I am not going to stand up all the time just to please the holier-than-thou crowd!

based on the other artitsts i'm intersted in, jimmys shows are still the best.and "i still love the shows" because i enjoy his music with my family and friends.from the pre-concert arrangements, tailgating, show, and drive home, no other show compares to it (in my opinion.) now with that being said i have always been critical of his ticket pricing, recent songwriting efforts, recent setlists, cover songs, overpriced products, etc. i am not a blind follower that thinks everything jimmy does is perfect.but i dont interpret a performer making a few mistakes during a live performance as "losing his faculties" either. there isnt a person alive who hasnt made mistakes when performing.

I love Jones Beach and had a great time again this year. Perfect weather helped. I was able to get some beach time for the first and only time this year and that's always a plus. I love the parking there. Easy to get in and no parking staff with room temp IQs screaming at you and trying to squeeze you into tiny spots. The wind was a bit of a challenge for the canopy but a plus for the kites my husband brought. Got to see lots of friends in the parking lot. Missed Barometer Soup but caught Jimmy & the Parrots for a few songs. Always fun. We had great seats, in the orchestra towards the back. The people in front of us were sitting but they people in back were standing. Perfect. I stood for the whole show but, must admit, my legs protested the next day. As for Jimmy and the teleprompter, who among us, who have reached a certain age, have not made a statement in our younger years that we may not have exactly held to?

Sure Mr Buffett uses a teleprompter....and more power to him!! Would you rather he didnt?

If he'd sing some of his wonderful neglected catalog of old songs, I wouldnt care if he came out and sang from sheet music ..... and an occasional mistake just makes him more endearing!! Sheesh!!!!

Sure Jimmy has gotten older but he has just as much energy and excitement if not more than he did 15 years ago.

I think some people remember Jimmy shows the way they want to, and not the way they really were. I was at the Fruitcakes Tour 15 years ago and the show was just as homogenized as it was this year if not more so.

Jimmy is still kickin ass at 62. And the wonder of the Coral Reefer Band and Reeferettes always amazes me.

I've got to add:
bg, I'm sorry that the shows have lost their magic for you. That must be a sad feeling to come to the realization that YOU have lost "those special feelings" you used to have. I hope I never feel that way, but who knows why it happens that way for some?

"Reeferettes". Would that be Jimmy's term for Nadira and Tina? Seems kind of demeaning, though....
After seeing/hearing Ms. Shakoor singing with the Boat Drunks at Elkhorn the night before, I can say that she's more than just stage dressing. I mean, the lady's got a helluva set of pipes.
(btw; I got her autograph, along with Mr. Utley's)
