LA/Orange/Riverside county fires are burning out of control. 2 Firefighters have been killed and the fire season is just beginning. Yikes its gonna be a bad one.

Driving to the east last week on the way to AZ, it was like driving thru a campfire. I could barely breathe or see on the freeway. Now that I am home, there is a ton of smoke in the air and my car is covered with ashes. It is something for sure.

Checked in with my relatives and all are ok, though if the winds pick up, there are no guarantees. Friends of mine have been evacuated from La Canada.

At twilight out in the backyard I could see the fire marching up the mountain toward Mt Wilson but now the smoke is so thick the flames are obscured. We're surrounded by extremely tall eucalpytus and other trees so even though we're close to the mountains, our view is mostly blocked. My bright idea of going out a small window onto the roof resulted in a very large and painful bruise on my leg, so that was the end of that. This is my stomping grounds, it hurts to see the devastation.

I pray that that hurricane coming up the Baja veers toward the fire and puts it out.
Last year the house next to us burnt to the ground, and I know what it is to feel absolutely HELPLESS. Thank God our neighbors wetted down our roof with their garden hoses, they saved our house. I can't imagine the horror of that HUGE fire coming in my direction.

That area used to be part of my stompin' grounds, when I lived down there. I've hiked in the area around Mt. Wilson, and have been to Wildlife Waystation (they're evacuating all the animals, yay!). It's just amazing how big these fires can get.

Here in the Midwest, depending on the season, we got floods, blizzards, or the occasional tornado.
Compared to California and the fires, I can't help but think we got the better end of the deal.
Lots of good thoughts and Phin power to all those involved, with an extra helping for those trying to shut these things down. May they be safe. Houses aren't worth human lives.

Loren, at last report Martine was desperately trying to get the last few big cats out. I know she will move heaven and earth to make sure they're all safe. We still haven't heard anything on DELTA Rescue, so I'm hoping no news is good news. And Shambala was in danger but Tippi Hedron hadn't evacuated the animals as of this afternoon. The fire has slowed in that direction so hopefully she made the right call.

Bill, you forgot mudslides, riots, earthquakes and drought. We've got it all.

The change in the weather seems to have slowed the fire down, but conditions are oppressive. The cloud cover and humidity is trapping the smoke making breathing very difficult. Ash continues to cover everything. But on a positive note, I came home to find the Martin Mars flying boat on its way to making a run on the Mt Wilson observatory. What a welcome sight that was! I managed to time it right and catch 3 times...it's about 60 minutes between each run. The big clue was the 3 news choppers hovering about the house.
