Now I know that this might seem like an attempt to start a divisive thread, but I actually think this article can be used to bring both democrats and republicans together. Let's all join in and count the number of typographical and grammatical errors.

In an article about public education.

They aren't showing it in Sulphur Springs or Yantis. Mr. Mojito said his superintendent is scared to do anything that deals with Obama and the SSISD superintendent says she's gotten angry phone calls about it.

My question ... why would anyone have a problem having the President talk to kids about doing their best and staying in school, which is what I understand the speech is geared toward? :-?

Some parents are talking about keeping their kids out of school.

If indeed the speech is about staying in school, reaching your potential, etc, I'm all for it. If it branches out into political agendas about the education system or any other political agendas I'm dead set against it (as I would be if a Republican or a Libertarian or a little green Martian were president). Encouraging kids to do well; fantastic. Political agendas; kids don't need to hear that. Talk to the parents via a TV address for such things.

A quote from President Obama: "I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education; about the importance of staying in school; how we want to improve our education system and why it’s so important for the country. So I hope everybody tunes in."

I'm all for points one and two and dead set against points three and four. Improvement of our education system isn't, IMO, a topic for kids. It's something to talk to parents and educators about.

It makes me sad that people want to kids home from school because of the speech. I've heard certain organizations have sent emails out to people saying the speech is more than "do your best and stay in school". They use scare tactics to freak some out.

Here's some of the crap the redneck idiots in my home town are saying:

pure socialist indoctrination

Why do people think this anul orifice walks on water

this is NOT a dictatorship - no matter how hard he tries to make it.

The opposition's children should not be put into the position of being forced to help the president do anything.

It makes me think of China and Cuba's propaganda to program the children.

Apparently the text for the speech will be posted online the day before so parents can read it and decide if they want their children hearing it.

Seriously? Improvement of our educational system shouldn't be a topic to discuss with the very people it affects most?

Yes, seriously, I don't think think young kids need to be presented with that. And that's not a partisan statement; I would honestly say the same thing no matter who was president.

Can't we have a discussion without rolling eyes?

As someone who is married to a teacher, I so agree with you. SOMEONE needs to be talking about improving education ... these days, parents turn their kids over to the independent school districts and expect the teachers to raise them ... to teach them the difference between right and wrong ... to coddle them rather than challenge them ... and God forbid, don't scold them because hell hath no fury like a guilty mama who should have been on the job for the first 6-17 years of their lives.

I agree. I think helping them understand why improving it is so important helps show them how important they are.

Is it my choice of emoticons or the fact that I disagreed with you that bothers you?
Sorry, I just don't get why it would be a bad idea to present kids with information regarding improvement of education.
But maybe that's just me. Or maybe I have a different understanding about what "education" should be.

I'm done here. I've already strayed from Jack's intended purpose and I apologize for that.

I think part of the uproar was the original lesson plan provided by the state dept

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... db5fb.html
The original lesson plan suggested students write down what they can do to help the president.
of course videos like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4yloips ... re=related

or this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdPSqL9_ ... re=related

Personally, I think it is silly. The Glen Beck paranoia thing is entertaining to me but not worth worrying about. Fortunately for the entire country, there are a lot of democrat congressmen and senators that are going to have to get off the far right agenda very soon since primary season starts in 3 months. The senate chase has already started in PA. I am sure there are other states where some dems will have to moderate their stance very soon.
