He served 42 days back in 1972. The victim is on record asking that he get no more jail time. From what I've read, he had a deal that he wouldn't have to serve anymore time but he heard the judge wasn't going to honor the deal, that's why he fled the country.

The judge was not going to let him off with just serving 42 days of psychiatric treatment
for the rape of a 13 year old. Polanski could have then chosen to got to trial but he chose
to skip the country instead. Some of his Hollywood buddies think he should be rewarded
for that. That also includes the people in the film industry in Europe that have been speaking
out against his arrest. His victim said she forgave him, but didn't say anything about him
not going to jail, where he belongs.

Besides...our prisons are so overcrowded here in California, it's not like he'd serve much if any time if they *did* extradite him. We've got better use for our tax dollars here right now.

However, I really don't know the real details of the case and perhaps there is much more to it.
