I'm liking the CD more and more ... it's a little more Townes and a little less WAR ... but I still like it ... and the two songs with HUGE double entendres are pretty darn funny. I wonder if either one will get radio air time??? [smilie=battingeyes.gif] [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

Sirius/XM is playing the new Lyle Lovett cd. I think there is zero chance of any Clear Channel Country Station touching any Lyle Lovett music.

Sad, but true.

Tim McGraw's schlock gets mega airplay and a true ARTIST like Lyle gets zero.

Townes Van Zandt. Guy Clark. Willis Alan Ramsey. Ray Wylie Hubbard. They don't get much air time. Clark's and Hubbards' songs get covered by country artists, and they're played, but Clark and Hubbard themselves, not so much.

I've been rediscovering Townes. Man, what a storyteller. Clark's new CD has some really good cuts. WAR? Well, maybe Gentilly will be released before I die. [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

The great thing about living where I do... I get to hear great Texas country all the time...

AND

the station out of Conroe - 105.3 Texas Mix - plays Lyle, REK, Todd, WAR, etc. The deep cut of the day was a double set from Todd Snider.

Lots of great listening and other extra stuff at Radio Free Texas...check it out:

http://www.radiofreetexas.org/

I love Guy's new CD. Sometimes I think all his stuff starts to sound the same, but there are some really wonderful lyrics and interesting sounding "things" on Some Days The Song Writes YOU. (percussion, female backing vocals, guitar that is really amazing--that Verlon Thompson is great.)

Guitar is a wonderful song. Verlon shines!! So is Eamon, which was written with Rodney Crowell. I still don't get this song, but it just reminds me so much of Steve Goodman's The Dutchman (or is that Michael Smith's?)

Listen to the whole album FOR FREE here:
(Terry, you'll love hearing If I Needed You)

Now, back to Lyle. I still haven't listened to his. :( Some Day I Will...

I just found the Mix 105.3 website! http://www.texasmix1053.com/index.cfm

If you look at the top left corner, there is a button to listen live!

Nancy - I like this station better than Radio Free Texas or even Gruene With Envy.

Nancy: I love the new Clark CD ... just love it. And, of course, I'm in love with "If I Needed You." But I was blown away by "The Guitar" and "Hemingway's Whiskey."

Am going to talk to him Thursday afternoon. Got some questions for me again? I *am* going to ask about Eamon ... :-?

I think I'm going to interview Darrell Scott ... cmntfish put me on to him ... he's worked with Clark on some CDs ...

Also, am excited to have snagged an interview with Vince Bell. I'm so impressed with his "Sun and Moon and Stars" on the new Lyle CD.

Got questions for him? :D

Now, if I can just get some phone time with Lyle his own self. [smilie=battingeyes.gif] [smilie=battingeyes.gif] [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

Enjoyed Vince Bell very much when I saw him a couple of times. He had a really bad accident, as I recall, and WORKED his way back to the LIVING. When I saw him the sound system was just the PITS that night, so he unplugged and told everybody to move in close and he played totally unplugged all evening. It was wonderful. He was playing a beautiful PAWLESS guitar made by a fellow Texan, Vince Pawless...lutier and great promoter of Texas Music.
http://www.pawless.com/

Questions for Guy? Does he ever go and visit Rockport or Port A? He used to actually work for a boat builder in Rockport, I understand. I know you've read all that. Does he have a boat? Does he have songs that did not MAKE the Some Days album? What is his favorite Townes songs of all the ones he has on his albums? Who does he enjoy writing with the most or does it just happen...like somedays the song writes you? What does he have to say about the old days at Luckenbach? Is he persnickerty about guitar tuning (like WAR) and about the sound when he plays. His great partner, Verlon Thompson, also had an accident and had lots wrong with shoulder and arm and just worked and worked his way back into being the GREAT great picker that he is.
http://www.verlonthompson.com/bio.cfm
Here is a great LOVE STORY about Verlon getting married to Demetria at the Farm.
http://danmiller.typepad.com/dan_miller ... story.html
(Terry, there is also a great story there with Verlon. You'd enjoy interviewing him too.)

Not too too familiar with Darrell Scott. He wrote...Great Day To Be Alive, that was covered by Cory Morrow and Pat Green on "Songs we wish we had written." I recently saw a youtube of Travis Tritt doing that song too. GREAT song.

AND...Terry, you are one lucky, talented lady and have a great job!

In this video, Vince tells the story of his accident and other things. I think you SHOULD watch this for sure.

The Guitar:

And you can see how good Verlon is with those fingers flying over those strings. Whew!

Terry, that song reminds me how Guy tells the story about learning to play guitar from his daddy's law partner, a woman, who gave him a Spanish guitar with nylon strings...he said he took it apart. He also builds guitars. You probably know all that. That Guitar Song and Cinco de Mayo in Memphis remind me of flamenco guitars. :)

He told me that story last year during our interview. Wouldn't it be great to have one of his guitars?

One of the reviews I read mentioned "If I Needed You" and said that Guy and Susanna were probably the first people to hear that song, since Townes was living at their house when it came to him in a dream. :D

Nancy: That's a GREAT video ... so glad you found it. Gives me a lot of questions to ask.

Mickey Raphael was on Bell's first CD.

The things you learn on the Internet!

Thanks!

Yeah, I watched an interview about him writing that song. Have you heard the story about Loop and Lil? It seems like we talked about this before.

http://insurgentcountry.net/class5.htm
Steve plays the second best known Townes tune, "If I Needed You". He cites the lyric "You will miss sunrise / if you close your eyes / that would break my heart in two" as a lyric you only have to ever write one of in a lifetime. He says, there are only so many original melodies out there and they've all been used up. "That's what I keep telling myself so I don't end up quitting." He believes there are still some new melodies out there, but they are gifts given to a very few and that's where the rest of us get them from. Townes was one of those people. He says that the lyrics were changed in the Emmylou and Doc Watson version to "Who could ill agree / she's a site to see / and a treasure for the poor to find." The original lyric was "Loop and Lil agree" and Loop and Lil were Townes' two parakeets. Loop was named after the North Loop drugstore in Austin where they used to buy codeine cough syrup and Lil was named after a girl Townes knew.

I guess we talked about this when it came out on Steve's album.

I guess I didn't realize Guy and Susanna lived in Austin. I thought they lived in Houston.

Wonder if he ever dreamed he was wandering around in a parking lot and wrote a song to explain it? 8) :) Bless his wonderful, sweet heart. (((Terry)))
