Trying to get ready for the new tour, I started to listen to it all the time(so I will know the songs when he sings them) & it has grown on me quite a bit -I love Rhumba Man & can't wait to hear it live!!

Bump.

Want to take the temperature. With the tour getting closer, curious is people are playing/listening to this album more or if they've yet to get it and how is it sitting? I'm liking it more and more with each listen - except the songs I didn't care for from the get go. Those just haven't gotten any better.

Curious to find out, possibly eventually, if the album does better sales wise when the tour gets going, if people who haven't gotten it wonder 'what was that song?' and end up getting it.

The usual...

I can't fathom how a self respecting Parrothead wouldn't have picked this up the day it was released.... i can't wait for April 20th so I can stop at Wal-Mart on the way home to pick up encores..... but maybe i'm a little more obsessive than most..... I still say that this is his best album since Barometer soup and have enjoyed all the new songs in the last few shows and look forward to more in 18 days.....

I've been listening to it, and a couple of songs that I originally didn't care for have grown on me....but I still don't care for "Turn up the Heat and Chill the Rose"....whenever it comes on I FF past it. I hope he doesn't play it at GW this year....I put it in the same category as "Math Sucks", "What if the Hokey Pokey...." or "Simply Complicated" [smilie=puking.gif]

I was driving home from work listening to this album last night. It has a certain vibe to it, that I like. Not all songs are great, but I do like most of them.

C-Dawg, I'm with you - Turn Up The Heat is as bad as the ones you mentioned plus a few others. I'll mention two - Vampires...and Silver Wings. Alright I know that one is a cover. OK then, Cultural Infidel.

I suppose that's Jimmy being hip - although I'm not sure who it's aimed at.

I still love the songs I did when it came out and I've gotten to like Nobody From Nowhere and Rhumba Man much more. Big Top is still on par with Turn Up The Heat - which means it gets skipped.

But see this is typical of an album of a fan one likes. Not all the songs are going to be great. There are songs on every album of every artist I like that I don't care for. So no big deal.

For some reason though, as much as I admire that this album is a little different than the past 4 albums, it seems to be missing something - and I don't just mean the steel drums.

Perhaps Jimmy needs to get back down island, write a few tunes and head to Nassau or Fort Lauderdale or Miami to record like he did back in the day (ah ha ha ha ha).

I also skip Tuen up the Heat, though I really like Big Top. In fact I often listen to the first 4 songs, skip to Rhumba Man, then repeat. I also skip Surfing in a Hurricane, I liked it when i first heard it in concert, now after hearing it many more times I have grown tired of it.

Wings might actually be one of my favorite songs that JB has recorded. I can listen to it over and over again

Surfing In A Hurricane - why does he do that - I know it's tongue in cheek and he's having fun but it's gotten a bit long - kind of vocal treatment where he's distorted and sounds like he's in a cave telling a story through a soup can on a string?

That tune is a bit odd.

I like the album as a whole. "Wings" is far and away my favorite song on the album. I also love "Rhumba Man" and "Beautiful Swimmers." I didn't like "Turn up the Heat" at all when I first heard it, but I'm warming to it. Still, I think it's the worst song on the album.

Anyone figured out where this album ranks in the discography? I'm still working on it but I do know for me it is above the following:
Last Mango In Paris
Riddles In The Sand
Far Side Of The World
Don't Stop The Carnival

Where else it will fit in has yet to be determined. I suppose a song by song ranking would help.

Not that it really matters - it's NEW!

No! I don't think he is talking about himself. It would be rather arrogant to think that you learned to be cool from yourself.

Different strokes for different folks. I love "Surfing" and it does not have the echo chamber effect when he does it live. Good thing we don't all like the same thing. "It's got a good beat, easy to dance to, I give it a 90."

The reason I speculated on that is because perhaps it's more of a wink and a nod toward Jimmy's past rock'n'roll life than anything - before the thing spun out of control (ha ha).

Yes, there are songs that need to grow on you. And songs to skip. I stop the CD before A lot to Dring About, but replay Wings and Rhumba Man.

Question on Wings - since the lyrics include that he has "fuel here in my bong", do you think his "wings" are also about getting high on substances other than his attitude?

Even though each of these albums have some good songs on them, they are my least favorites (not in order):

Down to Earh
High Cumberland Jubilee
Hot Water
Beach House on the Moon
Licese to Chill
Buffet Hotel

How strange. With all the hype and build up for Buffet Hotel, which was basically all of last year(!), Encores now has 9 pages to this one's 6.

Is Buffet Hotel really that....bad?

I can totally see Nobody From Nowhere being the opening song for the Buffet Hotel tour. It makes total sense. The opening guitar licks, it can just hang - he can come out and say he is somebody but started out as nobody...one of the better songs on the album for sure.

It almost sounds like JB says "If you're gonna fly high without beer you're gonna have to love the atmostphere..."

Still digging the album. Come on y'all...
