Official 2009 "what kids want for Christmas" thread

Post by buffettbride »

This year is a toughy because it will be our 12 year old's first Christmas with no real "toys" to speak of. We're also avoiding electronics because she seems to lose them, even though she's been eyeing and would make good use of a Kindle.

Her list so far includes:

Make-up
Hair dryer
Hair straightener
Clothes
Dr. Martens
Converse
Handbags
DS and Wii games

Our five year old is much simpler. He's hard core into Legos and this is his first year getting the small legos instead of the mega-block styles.

What else is cool this year?

I have no idea, because my grandkids are 2 and 1. And they have a LOT of toys and no more room. And I have a feeling clothes will not be well-recieved.

It is easier when they get to be teenagers. But EXPENSIVE !!! :o

My son is 9 and will most likely get some Transformers (if there are any he doesn't have), a Star Wars Lego ship with like 3000 pieces and a few video games for his PS2 and PSP.
He also likes Dino Valley playsets

My 12 year old nephew's Christmas and Birthday list look like this (his bday is Dec 8)

bass guitar
Xbox 360 or Wii

and some other little things....I already told him I would work on the guitar for him

My 6 year old nephew has come up with a list that equals over $600....I don't believe he's going to get a whole bunch off his list at least not exactly the things on the list!

Can someone fill me in on Bakugan? I don't know what it is and Tony has brought it up a few times. We never let Victoria get into or watch Pokemon. Is it like that?

It's a little like Pokemon, but not as extensive.

They're little ball-type things that have magnets in them. The cards are made of metal, and when the Bakugan rolls onto the card, they pop open, kinda like spring-loaded transforming marbles.

You would ideally play against someone, and they would roll their Bakugan onto the same card. Each Bakugan has "power numbers" (can't remember the exact term) and the cards either can add to or subtract from your Bakugan's number. You figure each person's total and whoever ends up with the highest number wins the battle.

At 5, the math might be a little tough (it's mostly adding/subtracting 3-digit numbers, but they're usually multiples of 25/50). But the Bakugan are actually pretty darn cool, my kids make up their own games with them.

Don't know anything about kids, but Meggie and Amber always appreciate a new catnip mousie. Since I make them it is cheap and easy and they never tire of them. Cats are a lot easier than kids!

Let's see.....probably get them a new chew toy, collar and peanut butter snacks. :D

Get 'em a couple of real hamsters and a Habi-trail system Image (...yeah, I know; I'm evil)
Feed, etc. for the real ones will probably be cheaper than the batteries that the fake ones will eat up.

factor in the cedar chips, the second cage to hold them in while you clean out the main one, disposing of rodent poop...

batteries aren't so bad.

I wonder if that is the same lego set that my nephew wants...apparently he's taken to hugging the box every time they go to WalMart. :o

Mal, my nephew could give you a very extensive lesson about Bakugan. I got it once on the phone and then again on the ride from the airport to the lake house. Guaranteed to put you to sleep or search for the nearest window to jump through.   Thankfully I think it has run its course with him, he doesn't seem to want Bakugan stuff for Christmas. It's all lego and Wii games...ugh. I'd like to get him something outdoorsy...he spends too much time with the wii IMHO. But I'm at a loss. I got him binoculars last year, but I'm at a loss for this year. :-?
