Post by diverg »

For those that love sailing and/or the Americas Cup here is live footage of the American entry practicing in San Diego harbor. the American teams is represented by Larry Ellison's. It is a 90 ft by 9- ft trimiran witha nearly 200 ft long wing mast.

I tell you this thing can fly!! At least 2x the wind speed and possibly 3x wind speed. Teh harbor makes a nice backdrop with the USN carriers. It is possible they will be sailing for the next 3 - 4 hours.

E and I were supposed to sail on this last month, but another group canceled, so we didn't get to go. :( :(

Actually Stars and Stripes made it into the live video feed of the BOR 90 racing trimaran. Here is some video some members of a sailing message board took of the action today. she should be out tomorrow, but I think she will be leaving the harbor.

I'm going to try to make tomorrow's test trials.
With the full 190-foot high wing deployed now, rather than the previous sail, it is INSANE how fast this craft moves on open waters.
They're talking of speeds reaching up to 45 knots :o

The Cup trials next year are going to be like nothing we've ever seen!
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

You better have a fast boat, and be there when she leaves her mooring. Otherwise you'll be lucky to find her. Also you forgot to mention how nimble she is. Can turn on a dime, tack and etc.

Staredge, I know you haven't like all the legal drama to get to this point, but these boats are truely amazing. The American entry is highly manuervable with its wing mast. It is really amzing how quick it can turn. Thye are still testing the wing and hopefully they will be able to use it.

Less the legal aspect than just a passionate dislike of multi-hulls. Money got involved (not that it wasn't always a part of the sport: see Lipton, Sir Thomas) and that sort of soured me on it. That and a general decline of civility and sportsmanship in general.

Sorry, no... got held up with errands within my job, and could not get out to Pt. Loma
..and I don't agree about today's advanced designs ruining the spectre of racing. This tri-hull is truly amazing.
The 12-meters of years ago look like old steam trains in comparison to airplane technology employed today.

Have you ever seen how many people line the tracks when the "old steam trains" make the occasional pass-through? Even today, little kids still refer to a train as a 'choo-choo'!
Sometimes the old dogs can still do a few tricks too.
