Exactly ... why doesn't SOMEONE stand up and say, "Mr. Buffett, the emporer has no clothes" when he tries to cut something like that?

I tried -I really tried - to like it, but I can't listen to it all the way through. He - and his people - jumped the shark on this one. At least, to my ears.

Spew!

I think something is missing in "Surfing in a Hurricane" ... something got lost in the translation. I loved it live, but it seems flat on the CD. IMHO.

The past few albums it's rather obvious Jimmy doesn't spend much time actually working on the recording of an album. He does a scratch vocal to a guitar track to a drum loop or click and then does vocal comps and then the band records the rest of the song.

Or they just do a song one or two times and call it done and he records vocals and it's done. The translation from being played live to recorded in a studio should, if anything, improve it. But that just goes to show that's not always true - and what's probably happening is you're actually hearing the song as opposed to dancing along (or whatever) and so it's not as good as you remember hearing it live.

Which is a very common thing. It can happen the other way as well. I remember hearing Pascagoula Run on the Lizard tour and thought 'What the hell is THIS song?' and it turned out to be a lot better live than on the LP.

But yeah, someone needs to tell Mr DRALS that he is DRALSing it too much on the past few albums.

I've heard 8 of the 12 songs either at concerts I attended or on RM broadcasts of other shows. It's looking like this is the first Buffett studio album in 30+ years that I won't be buying. I like Nobody From Nowhere. I like Beautiful Swimmers but I already have it from the Far Side Of The World demo. I like Rhumba Man but I have the original by Jesse Winchester and I like that better. I like Surfing In A Hurricane less every time I hear it. Same with Summerzcool and A Lot To Drink About. Chill The Rose is just a bad song. I downloaded the Paris show and listened to it a couple of times, I had the same "WTF?" moment listening to that song as I did when I heard Buffett do Trippin' Billies. Just awful. Oh well. I need my money more than he does anyway.

To me the sample of Surfing In A Hurricane sounds like the youtube version from Bridgeview Il.
I really like what little I've heard on this album. I like the reverb effect on Jimmy's voice in Turn up the Heat & Chill The Rose and I like the chorus and reggae vibe. I like that Jimmy is trying something unexpected but I'm pretty opened minded musically and am all over the place. Buffet Hotel (the song) reminds me of Wheel Inside The Wheel. Seems to be a pretty upbeat album.

alright....just from the 30 second clips, here are my initial thoughts:

Nobody From Nowhere - like it. enjoyed hearing the live version, and i think its a good song to kick the record off with

Wings - maybe my favorite song off the new cd. loved hearing a banjo in the 30 second clip. CANNOT WAIT to hear the full version!

Big Top - this is probably the song i am most interested in hearing. seems like my favorite 30 second clip. upbeat jimmy (but not cheesy!)

Beautiful Swimmers - always wondered why this didnt make the cut for Far Side...i like how it balances this upbeat album out.

Turn Up The Heat and Chill The Rose - terrible. man, i had such high hopes for this song after seeing it on youtube...even the title is awesome, but jimmy....dont rap...please!!!

Summerzcool - not much to say. the ultimate summer song. lyrics were on my facebook page as soon as he previewed it on youtube last year.

Rhumba Man - loses alot from the live version, but still pretty strong.

We Learned To Be Cool From You - eh...maybe the full lenght track will win me over...only time will tell!

Surfing In a Hurricane - seems like they slowed this song down for the cd. man...it was so fun on tour, now its just bland....

Life Short Call Now - no idea what to think about this one. very interesting....

Buffet Hotel - i have a feeling the 30 second version wont do this song justice....for whatever reasons,i think im really going to enjoy it...and im looking forward to hearing the chorus

A Lot To Drink About - wish he would have kept this as a concert-only song, but it will be fun to listen to in 20 years and think back. guess i'll have to explain who bernie madoff is and what AIG was to my kids one day!!!! :D

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on each sound clip. It makes me want to hear the new CD that much more.

I just wasn't too excited about the NEW album before, but now that the time is getting closer, I'm really anticipating hearing MORE. It'll be fun to get the liner notes too.
