New Orleans Jazz Fest

I have always wanted to go. I'm looking at the preliminary schedule this year and once again really considering it. I'm thinking of telling dh to give this to me for christmas.
I have a few questions.
Will we be able to explore NO at all if we go during the fest, maybe go a day early or a day late, even though it's crowded?
Will it be impossible to go to one or two of the restaurants/cafes we'd like to try?
Housing costs - what's the best way to contain this. We may go as a couple only, then we're looking for the best location for the best price. I may consider renting something from vrbo and opening the trip up to my college kids. If it's a bit off the main area will they be able to find a safe way to get around?
What is the difference between the two weekends, besides the obvious schedule?
How early should I book things and buy tix?
And finally, what are the chances JB will be playing?

I have gone the past few years. Here is the advice given to me that I follow. I have had a joyful experience every year.

Book your flight and hotel in February. Rooms are expensive, because they give you the ‘festival weekend’ rate.

I get there one day early and go on a swamp cruise. The people at my hotel book it for me. Its around $50 or$60 if I remember correctly, but it is a blast. I will email you some photos of my swamp cruise if you would like to see.

Take the shuttle to the fairgrounds. It’s real easy, stops at all the hotels and takes you right there. Real easy and not expensive. It’s a long day, so pace yourself in whatever it is you need to do.

I stay at the hotel on the corner of Canal and Bourbon. This puts me right where I want to be at night. It also makes it easy to go back to the hotel to refill my water bottle and pee. There are more or less two big rules that are enforced on Bourbon St. No fighting and no peeing in public. Other than that, it seems everything else is ok. But do not, do not, I will say it a third time…do not get caught peeing in public there. The cops there (who BTW, happen to be the most obese cops I have ever seen in my life) will grab you right away for it.

I don’t drink anymore, so I can’t really comment on the must visit drinking places. But there are plenty. I remember one deal; you pay $50 and get a wristband. That gives you all you can eat and all you can drink at five bars on Bourbon St. That is a good deal. Someone else will give you better direction as to where to drink I am sure.

And do not buy any beads there; you can pick them up off the ground.

That is a very general idea of it, if you want anymore input from me, feel free to write me anytime.

Honestly, I wouldn't go back.

Yes, it's a lot of great music for cheap, but just about everyone you think "Wow! I'd like to see them!" will be playing at the same time.

That's not the bad part though- it's a clusterflock. There's minimal security and no attempts at crowd control, so when you decide it's not worth it to be crammed in like a sardine to see a show you've seen 40+ times before, you can't get out. You can cram in tighter somewhere else (and said somewhere else is the paved path where the exit should be), but that's it. If you want room to move, you'll be on the horsetrack, where even the jumbotrons are too far away too see (unless of course you want to set up camp when the gates open, and sit there all day).

Last year, there was a thunderstorm early in the day, but it cleared up. Everything was a muddy mess, and the mud made my skin itch/burn. Nothing was ever put down- no straw, no plywood, no sand, nothing. Just wet grass that turned into mud after 50,000 people trampled it.

With 1/4 of the crowd, it would be great (it was in 06). But last year was just flat out too many people in far too little space.

I think it's a good idea to not pee in public.

Another thing I was told which I have done….go see the acts you would not normally see. For instance, I see the Allman Brothers every year when they come to town. Their stage was sooooooo damn crowded it was not fun.

The best time I had was in the small gospel tent. I heard a choir from some little local black church in New Orleans. It was pure magic. I would have never heard them at a concert or anywhere else. I really loved it

I ‘saw’ Stevie Wonder; I was about ¼ mile away from the stage while he was onstage. I went to where I could not see the stage, but the sound was great. I work at the Jazzfestlive booth, so I got to hear the show from there.

I did however hang out behind the stage two years ago with Tiki and Balcony Girls for Jimmy B. We could not see the stage, but the sound was great and the company of those folks could not be matched. Other than that I do not try to get close to a big stage.

since men like to whip it out and pee anywhere, do you think there is any place you walk barefoot that is free of man pee.

Man pee??? Geez, you sound like a eight-year-old boy worried about catching "girl cooties" from his sister.
As far as that goes, if you live in a municipality of any size, the water that comes out of your tap has probably passed through someone's kidney earlier.
So what's your point?

I live on the beach and swim in the ocean. I would guess that at any given time I might be 15% pee. Man woman chil and fish. Hehe.

I also guess that pee creates the perfect acidity for beautiful roses but do pee doesn't make lawns happy

Avoid Bourbon St at all costs!!!!!!!!!

And chances are JB won't be playing JF next year. That's just a guess. But he does pop up onstage with some people here and there (and when that happens he's usually in town for a couple days and does some kind of show at Margaritaville). But he's not a regular act - but he has played there a good bit.

A lot of people in New Orleans groan when they see Buffett's name on the list. But somehow he still draws around 80,000 people. So...come to New Orleans to hear a lot of mostly good music and eat some fantastic food. The first weekend usually is more mellow than the second weekend. Friday especially. The second weekend is, although not always, a bit hotter than the first weekend. Jazz Fest has reinstated the second Thursday, as it's called (also known as Local's Day) and it is very mellow.

And yes, a amount of the police in New Orleans are "obese" (HUGE is more like it). But some of them do enjoy life as well (http://www.thisistrue.com/images/mardigras2.jpg).

Well, it looks like Jimmy is going to play the 2010 Jazz Fest. Now a little more incentive to go? To New Orleans I mean.

Where did you see that? I looked on the line up and didn't see what day he's playing.

If there is no peeing in public, why does Bourbon Street smell of stale beer, vomit, and urine?
