Brushes with Infamy??

Post by ragtopW »

I have been thinking, after the D.C. sniper thread. Of all the people that
were affected.. by those guys.. so I got to thinking.. I have had a few brushes with
the Infamous, some close.. some not to close.. and some after the fact. But brushes none the less
First .
Juan Corona.. mass murder killed transient farm workers and buried them in orchards near Yuba City Ca. that He had access to or was a foreman working on the property.
My Uncle worked the case (along with a bunch of Yuba City/Sutter County LEOs)
My father knew a couple of the Victims ( they also worked as labor at Construction sites)
I later picked Peaches and Prunes on the same Property. (I never knew that until later)
I also went to school with His Nephew..
Second..
The Zodiac killer I did live near the Bay (but, not THAT near)
but at one time He threatened to shoot out the tire of a school Bus and shoot the
Kiddies as the got out.. I was going to school on an Air Force Base at the time and they had info (it seems they found a place or two that a car had stopped and waited for quite a while, and the Cops had reports of a car with a lone person in it following the Bus.) that we could be targets..
For a couple of Months we had Security police both in front of and behind the bus.. as well as on the Bus.. All armed to the Teeth,, (remember this was during Vietnam, most of those guys had done a year in either Da Nang or Saigon) that game ended.. and the Zodiac disappeared

Last.. and the one that was the by far way too close..
I saw Jim Jones preach on a San Francisco street corner not only that but I shook hands with Him
(yep not supposed to Be In the City a school day and all :) :) ) we knew him as that Crazy street corner preacher.. Saw him a couple of times.. Never fell for his Spiel
But I could see that many people were” getting on the Bus”. as is were (for the record He always had
A great singing group)

You?? Any stories??

WOW, Wayne. All I can say is WOW!!!

Nothing comparable to yours (I'm sure nobody wants to hear of my war stories).
However, I DID shake hands with, got an autograph from, and had a very nice conversation with Danny Thomas 36 hours before he died. (Feb. 4th, 1991).

OH, and have I mentioned I've p*ssed in all seven seas?

I had a good friend who danced in the Strip Club that was down the street from where Jeffrey Dahmer lived and killed.

I can lay no claim to brushes with infamy, but some who know me can.

One of my law school classmates worked on the 84th floor of the World Trade Center. He got out before the building collapsed.

My karma is fortunately a bit too good for me to get into situations like that most of the time. (*knocking on wood*)

I was on the Cypress Structure (I-880) in Oakland, one week to the day before the Loma Prieta earthquake that brought the whole thing pancaking down.

One of my coworkers was knocked over by one of Haile Selassie's bodyguards, during a visit to California many years back.

I know several people who've been *much* closer to Stuff Happening than I. I'm okay with that, actually.

I know someone who worked for a firm in one of the towers. She was running late that morning, fortunately. Most of the rest of her firm wasn't, unfortunately.

In the late 70's/early 80's, I would travel to Milwaukee on business and would stay at the (then) Holiday Inn (went on to become a Marquette dorm) on Wisconsin Ave, a couple blocks from where he lived, and would shop at the Blommers Chocolates where he worked.

A good friend of mine worked for Oracle and had an office in the World trade Center. On Sept 10th he got a call from San Fransisco and caught a red eye to go work on a problem they had in SF. It was late in the day of Sept 11th before we found out Seth wasn't in the building when it fell.

My cousin flew American Flight 11 from Boston every single Tuesday for business. On September 11, 2001, he was at home sick...

My friend LCDR Vince Tolbert wasn't as fortunate. He was at work in the Navy Command Center, in the Pentagon, when American Flight 77 obliterated that part of the building.

They change the flight numbers after a crash or disaster but the route and departure time are still roughly the same. I've flown on the replacements for American Flight 11, BOS to LAX, and United Flight 175, BOS to SFO. Pretty eerie....

A nearby neighbor who I can look straight out my window across at his house right now
was just recently tried and convicted in Federal Court, of twice threatening, on a Yahoo message board, to shoot President Obama in the head with a .50-caliber rifle. :o
The fact that he used his wife's account on Yahoo, and did, in fact, own that particular rifle along with many other large arms made him easy to identify.
He claimed he was drunk, stupid, misunderstood, and mistaken, but it didn't take the jury an hour to reach their verdict.

He's facing 10 years on both counts, and it is said that this sentence will be not be taken lightly by the judge, and is forthcoming in the new year.

I noticed that they weren't handing out candy back on Halloween :-?

He actually worked at the Ambrosia factory.

Friends of mine who live in Bath Township, Ohio had their woods dug up looking for bodies that Dahmer may have buried when he lived next door to their house (prior to their moving in) with his father.

When I visited my in-laws in Miami in the 70's, I used to attend church occassionally with Richard Nixon. :wench:

I met PeeWee Gaskins thru my sister and a friend of hers....once. That was enough. He was creepy as hell...

According to what came out later, I'm lucky I came out alive...What a total whack job.....

Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins was the most prolific serial killer in South Carolina history. Once his brutality was unleashed, he knew no boundaries, torturing, killing, cannibalizing victims, both male and female. In his taped memoirs for the book, Final Truth by author Wilton Earl, Gaskins said, 'I have walked the same path as God, by taking lives and making others afraid, I became God's equal. Through killing others, I became my own master. Through my own power I come to my own redemption..'
