While visiting my folks over Thanksgiving in southwestern Virginia (Wytheville) we took the opportunity to drive over to Galax, Va. and see Wayne Henderson and Jeff Little perform at the Rex Theater for the Blue Ridge Backroads at the Rex Radio Show.
Absolutely incredible. My folks have been raving about Wayne Henderson for years. The man is absolutely amazing on the guitar and apparently is considered to be perhaps one of the best guitar maker/craftsmen ever with a waiting list for his guitars that now extends for over 10 years.
He hails from Rugby, Virginia (pop. 7) and has made guitars for musicians such as Chet Adkins and most famously Eric Clapton. Apparently even Eric Clapton had to wait 7 years to get his custom made Wayne Henderson guitar, and true to form, Wayne required Clapton to come by his shop in Rugby, Virginia (pop. 7) to pick it up himself.
Now being on the most novice of a guitar person myself, I am ashamed to say I had never really heard much about Wayne Henderson, but after seeing him perform Friday night in this small theater in Galax, Virginia and getting the opportunity to meet with him after the show and see his most recently crafted guitar which he presented to the new owner after the show, I cannot wait to see him perform again.
I plan on picking up the book written about him, Clapton's Guitar and getting him to autograph it when we visit his store on my next trip down to southwestern Virginia to visit my folks again.
I'm sure most of you guitar lovers were already aware of this talented man, but I had never had the opportunity to hear him play or see one of his guitars up close until this weekend.
Wow....you're from Wytheville? I always thought Wytheville was only there so I could connect with I 77 on my way south.
Ya learn something new everyday I guess.

LOL (nope). I'm from Vah Beach. My folks moved to Wytheville back in the late 70s after I graduated high school.
