Where in Nor Cal does Jimmy usually play?
Hubby and I are planning a trip to Modesto, CA some time next year to see his best buddy. We'd like to time it with a concert since the last time we saw Jimmy was in Aspen of '05. When Jimmy plays Nor Cal, what city is it?
I know it's early to begin the planning, and there's always the possibility of random cancellation of west coast concert legs, but we're just trying to get a feel for where we'd be and how to work the flights and such. We're 99% sure we'll go see his buddies...timing it with Jimmy would just kind of be the frosting.
I think from Denver we have to fly into San Francisco or Sacramento to get close to Modesto, and we'd likely be renting a car.

For the most part it is usually Shoreline in Mt View. Although, last year he was at the Concord Pavilion. Has done indoor winter shows at the dreaded Shark Pit in San Jose and Oracle Arena in Oakland. Couple of shows at the Fillmore, but for the masses it is usually Shoreline.

Shoreline isn't bad as a venue either. But if memory serves me it's damned steep.beachmusic wrote:For the most part it is usually Shoreline in Mt View. My first Buffett show was at Shoreline.....it's much like GW in the way it's built. Great place to see a show.pair8head wrote:Shoreline isn't bad as a venue either. It might be a bit more expensive, but I'd fly into Sacto over SFO any day if you're coming to the central valley. It's a looooong ugly drive from SF to Mo-town, and more or less a straight shot down the freeway from Sac. If you're looking to do some touristy stuff in the city you may want to consider SFO then, or Oakland. Between the 3 airports you should find some schedules/prices that work with your plans.

Re: Where in Nor Cal does Jimmy usually play?
Shoreline's a decent venue. The Fillmore is hard to beat, if you can get tickets - capacity is about a thousand people.
The main issue with Bay Area venues appears to be a fair bit of official hostility to the type of tailgating that occurs at many East Coast venues, and even down at Irvine. This makes pre-concert parties a bit tame. And for something like the Fillmore or the Shark Tank, there's really no good place to *have* one.
That said, we'd love to have you out to visit for a concert. Most of the time, Jimmy plays here in the fall, connecting with the Vegas shows that have happened every year but last. If not then, April/May are most likely. The last time he played at the Oakland Arena (now the Oracle Arena), it was a March show.

you might also look at San Jose (another straight shot)
or depending on how much time you have to travel... Reno is sometimes mega cheap..
BUT anywhere you check plane tix, also check out rental cars..
the difference in cars can eat up savings in plane tix..
that said.. I would pray for another show in Concord..

I thought about San Jose too, but honestly, the traffic between the central valley and the bay area is so bad now that I really shy away from any of those airports.ragtopW wrote:Brown Eyed Girl wrote:It might be a bit more expensive, but I'd fly into Sacto over SFO any day if you're coming to the central valley. AHHH Haaaaa OK I knew that you were aware of SJ..
I guess that when I visit the bay anymore I expect the Traffic and just live with it..
Re: Where in Nor Cal does Jimmy usually play?
I used to go to Shoreline all the time to see the GD. It is a great venue. The best way to get there is to fly into San Jose. I promise you, its easier to fly into San Jose.

Re: Where in Nor Cal does Jimmy usually play?
yeah, but a large portion of the traffic is coming from the valley, it is amazing how many people commute from even farther east than I am. When I hit the road at 3:30 am, I-5 is PACKED with cars, and it just gets worse from there.ragtopW wrote:Brown Eyed Girl wrote:I thought about San Jose too, but honestly, the traffic between the central valley and the bay area is so bad now that I really shy away from any of those airports.ragtopW wrote:Brown Eyed Girl wrote:It might be a bit more expensive, but I'd fly into Sacto over SFO any day if you're coming to the central valley. I love Sac. It's an easy airport to navigate and easy to get to. I just wish they had more flights.

modesto has an airport also. united seemd to be the big player there, so therefore prices could be higher. but worth looking into when you make your plans. also if your going to rent a car, try hotwire over anybody else.ragtopW wrote:Brown Eyed Girl wrote:It might be a bit more expensive, but I'd fly into Sacto over SFO any day if you're coming to the central valley. Re: Where in Nor Cal does Jimmy usually play?
The only airline service Modesto currently offers is Skywest flights to and from SFO. I'm guessing that might be a very expensive addition, plus flight availability probably isn't that great. Worth looking into in case United offers a deal with that extra leg, though...and it definitely would be convenient.mason wrote:

Back in the 80s and early 90s when Stockton had jet service to LAX, I'd often fly instead of making the 5 hour drive. Some of the flights stopped in Modesto. I wondered why they just didn't build a really long runway between the two airports, because the planes barely got in the air before touching down again.

Are you still going to the Denver concert next year as well?
