"Out on Daufuskie Island the bulldozers bury the past," Jimmy wrote in "The Prince of Tides," his nod to Pat Conroy and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Well, as I sit here across the river from Daufuskie Island tonight, I realize that although development has come to Daufuskie, it is still relatively sparse and still fraught with difficulties for the developers.
Perhaps the ghosts of Daufuskie are still protecting the old island, for now.

Keep haunting ghosts! I really am of the belief that there is land that should be left alone and not developed, and if it is developed, the ghosts of the past will not appreciate being messed with and fight.
Prince of Tides is one of my favorite JB songs.

Here we are, maybe it's because in spite of all the work we do
It's the child in us we really value
Here we are, with our fins up and our feathers flashing
Here we are, with our coconut shell brassieres chanting

It's sometimes hard to take back things but they're now trying to outlaw gas-powered vehicles on the island, except for srevice vehicles.
Every day you wake up you get another chance to do it right.

First time I went there was back in High School...We had a great Civics teacher who took us there for a full day field trip....I fell in love with it back then....What a lovely step back in time.....palmettopirate wrote:It's sometimes hard to take back things but they're now trying to outlaw gas-powered vehicles on the island, except for srevice vehicles.
Made several trips there over the next few decades.....Love it there....

I first visited there in '89 when development was still in the discussion stages. Back then, the local kids still attended the old school house where Pat Conroy taught. It was like stepping back in time.
