a new computer question
How do I move my iTunes from my old computer to my new one. I've been back everything up to a flash drive, but the only option I see from iTunes is to back it up to a disk, and the computer I'm getting rid of is so old that it can't write cds. Thanks.

Re: a new computer question
Hi Jack..
I bought a maxtor external drive / usb (about $50) and just copied from the old machine to the drive and then to the new machine..
you could do it with a flash drive but it would take tons of time..
and i figured the external drive would be good for backups/photo storage etc.

Re: a new computer question
Jack I don't use itunes but I have used flash drives. Couldn't you copy it to the flash drive by going to my computer and copying from your c drive to the flash drive? Then on the new computer copy from the flash drive over to your c drive?

Re: a new computer question
I had 40gb of music in Itunes so it would have taken me tons of effort using a 4gb flash drive..
But the technique is the same...

you may have to unhide files. I seem to recall having to to that.popcornjack wrote:I tried going into my c drive but I couldn't find iTunes in there.

Re: a new computer question
Yes and no..stuff from itunes that you download is compressed a lot..ph4ever wrote:gunthermoose wrote:I had 40gb of music in Itunes so it would have taken me tons of effort using a 4gb flash drive..

most of mine came from mp3's or cd's that were compressed a lot....
Jack..
Assuming you're on xp go to your start bar and then search for music
when the songs show up you can right clik on properties or view details to find where they are stored...

You should just be able to copy this whole folder to the flash drive and copy it to the new computer.surfpirate wrote:default (if you used it) is .... Re: a new computer question
What operating system are you using? If you're using Windows XP or later, you can can create a network, link the two computers, and then transfer data that way.
I have a product called PC-Link that connects my laptop and my desktop with a USB cable - when I'm travelling, I dump my pix onto the laptop and then when I get home I transfer them to the desktop via the USB link. It does the job pretty well.....

Re: a new computer question
If you have your computers on the same network, the newest version of iTunes has a feature that allows you to share the music between all of the computers on your network. At my house, we now have 4 back ups of what is on iTunes.

If you can't create a network or use PC-link, I'd go with the external hard drive. You need one anyway, to do BACKUPS!

That's how I transferred my daughter's music from her desktop to her new laptop. The instructions are very clear and easy to use.surfpirate wrote:I just did this using my iPod Video as a hard drive and following the instructions at this site .... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329.

Re: a new NEW computer question
Okay that problem solved. (To show you how ignorant I am about computers I was trying to move the entire iTunes thingy, not just the music contained there within.) Here's my next question:
I'm going to give my old computer to my nephews (ages 12 and 10). How do I make sure there is nothing left on the hard drive for them to accidentally find, if you know what I mean.

Oh I know what you mean Mr......and there shouldn't be anything like that on there to make you worry about someone else finding it to begin with!!!!
