Sorry for the *slight diversion* today from our usual storyline .... but last night I was channel surfing and must have watched a dozen different talking heads on the various *news* channels spouting their particular brand of slanted news blather.
I mean, honestly, Sarah Palin and Jay Leno were the *TOP STORIES* of the day (?) !!!!!!
I turned my television set off.
Before I went to write today's strip, I checked my email, and someone sent me this great video that uses Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" as a school teaching tool. So now I had this tune in my head when I went to write today's strip.
Soooo ...... (with apologies to Billy Joel) ...... I wrote today's strip and the following song to express my frustration with the state of television news today. Feel free to throw tomatoes at me.
WE DIDN'T START THE TV NEWS
Network anchors, evening news, that was all we had to choose
Walter Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley, and the radio
Just 30 minutes, simple graphics, no one tried to be a maverick
Facts and figures, quotes and pictures, a nightly do-si-do
Uncle Walter, trusted dude, never was he loud and rude
Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, basic news without opinions
Now no matter how you lean, talking heads on every screen
500 channels left and right, fair and balanced, who is right?
We didn't start the fire
Now they're always talking
Someone's always squawking
No we didn't start the fire
And they talk on, and on and on and on
Chevy Chase, SNL, then Weekend Update went to hell,
John Stewart, smarmy cool, but too much makes him look the fool
Stephen Cobert, on the air, "Nation" should we even care?
Bob Schieffer, seemed to care, now Katie Couric's in the chair
Sarah Palin, Lou Dobbs, somehow both of them have jobs
Chris Matthews, Hardball, telling me he knows it all
Obermann is Counting Down, and Britt Hume he will wear a frown
Andy Rooney, always pouting, and somewhere Billy Mays is shouting!

Local News, a bunch of actors, Bill O'Reilly is no factor
Barbara Walters on The View, Baba Wawa, no longer news
Hugh Downs told us plenty, but then hindsight's always 20/20
60 Minutes, out of gas, and Dan Rather sure left fast
Opinionated, fabricated, seems everyone is always jaded
Talk ain't cheap, ratings rule, advertising dollars make that cool
That's today's TV News Biz, tell Uncle Walter "That's the way it is"
So now we are always doubting, and somewhere Billy Mays is shouting!

great job SP.....the tune is too kewl....maybe the "boys (critters) in the band" could learn that one... and I agree the announcer does look alot like a young Chevy Chase..but yes lets go back to the island
